In view of today’s meeting on migration between the EU Heads of Government, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: “The EU is facing a big solidarity and humanitarian crisis. Until the urgent revision of the Dublin rules is seriously taken into hand, it is imperative that EU governments share the responsibility by distributing amongst themselves, according to fair and equitable quotas, all those who are fleeing war and persecution. Egoistic national stands like those of Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, are not conducive to alleviating, let alone solving, the existing problems. Malta’s position in supporting a Europe of solidarity is indeed commendable.
Temporarily suspending the Schengen agreement and therefore limiting the freedom of movement of EU citizens, as recently suggested by Maltese MP Franco Mercieca at an OSCE meeting, will not help at all”.

In vista tal-laqgħa tal-lum dwar il-migrazzjoni li ser issir bejn il-kapijiet tal-Gvernijiet tal-Unjoni Ewropeja, ic-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, il-Prof. Arnold Cassola, qal: “L-Unjoni Ewropea qed tiffaċċa kriżi kbira umanitarja u ta’ solidarjeta’. Sakemm issir ir-reviżjoni urġenti tar-regoli ta’ Dublin, huwa assolutament meħtieġ li l-Gvernijiet tal-UE jerfgħu flimkien ir-responsabilita’, billi jqassmu bejniethom, skont kwoti ġusti, n-numri ta’ dawk kollha li qed jaħarbu mill-gwerer u mill-persekuzzjoni. Pożizzjonijiet egoistiċi nazzjonali, bħal dawk tal-Ungerija, is-Slovakkja u r-Repubblika Ċeka, la jtaffu u lanqas isolvu l-problemi eżistenti. F’dan il-kuntest huwa xieraq li ngahhru l-pożizzjoni li qed tieħu Malta favur Ewropa ta’ solidarjeta’.
Is-sospensjoni temporanja tal-ftehim ta’ Schengen, bil-limitazzjoni tal-moviment ħieles taċ-ċittadini tal-Unjoni Ewropea, kif ippropona d-Deputat Franco Mercieca f’laqgħa tal-OSCE, ma tgħin assolutament xejn”
