Alternattiva Demokratika condemns the violence at the Hal Far closed centre. Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: “Violence is no solution to problems. We unreservedly condemn the violent acts in the Hal Far detention centre and all those who resorted to such violence. We demand an independent inquiry to establish what happened yesterday. As European Greens, we are the only political family campaigning for a radical rehaul of the Dublin convention in order to ensure that migrants landing in Malta can relocate to other EU countries.”
Alternattiva Demokratika Deputy Chairperson, Carmel Cacopardo, said: “We fully support the six NGOs (Aditus Foundation, Integra Foundation, JRS Malta, KOPIN, the People for Change Foundation, and SOS Malta) in their demand to engage with the Ministry of the Interior on this delicate issue of national importance. It is appalling that this request has so far been ignored by Minister Manwel Mallia.”
Robert Callus, AD spokesperson for social policy, said: “It is very clear that this government only does what is fashionable rather than what is right. The naked truth is that the unreasonable length of detention is harmful on all counts. It costs the country a lot of money, extreme and unnecessary suffering for the immigrants and significantly increases racism since Maltese people complain about its costs.
The immigrants should be out there working and paying their N.I. contributions and Income tax, even if this is temporary in the case of those not deserving protection. Long term detention is the main cause for this volatile situation in our overcrowded centres with the immigrants and army officers being the front liners who suffer its consequences.”

Alternattiva Demokratika tikkundanna l-vjolenza fic-centru maghluq ta’ Hal Far. Ic-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, Prof. Arnold Cassola, qal: “Il-vjolenza mhix is-soluzzjoni tal-problemi. Ahna nikkundannaw bla rizervi l-atti vjolenti fic-centru ta’ detenzjoni ta’ Hal Far u lil kull min kin involut f’dawn l-atti. Nitolbu li ssir inkjesta indipendenti biex jigi stabbilit x’gara l-bierah. Bhala Greens Ewropej, ahna l-unika familja politika li qed naghmlu kampanja biex il-konvenzjoni ta’ Dublin tigi mibdula radikalment biex tizgura li immigranti li jaslu Malta ikunu jistghu imorru u jiccirkolaw f’pajjizi ohra fl-UE.”
Id-deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, Carmel Cacopardo, qal: “Ahna nappoggaw bis-shih lis-sitt NGOs (Aditus Foundation, Integra Foundation, JRS Malta, KOPIN, the People for Change Foundation, u SOS Malta) fit-talbiet taghhom li jkollhom komunikazzjoni mal-Ministeru tal-Intern fuq din il-kwistjoni delikata ta’ importanza nazzjonali. Hija tal-misthija li din is-sejha s’issa giet injorata mill-Ministru Manwel Mallia.”
Robert Callus, il-kelliem ta’ AD ghall-politika socjali, qal: “Huwa car li dan il-gvern jaghmel biss dak li hu moda aktar milli dak li huwa tajjeb. Il-verita’ hija li z-zmien twil ta’ detenzjoni huwa ta’ hsara ghal kulhadd. Qed iqum hafna flus lill-pajjiz, qed jikkawza hafna tbatija bla bzonn lill-immigranti u qed izid ir-razzizmu fost il-Maltin li jgergru minhabba l-flus li qed jintefqu.
Post l-immigranti huwa barra fuq ix-xoghol fejn ikunu jistghu ihallsu l-bolla u l-income tax, anke jekk din tkun fazi temporanja ghal dawk li ma jinghatawx protezzjoni. Id-detenzjoni fuq medda twila ta’ zmien hija l-kawza ewlenija ta’ din it-tensjoni fic-centri ffullati taghna. L-immigranti u l-ufficjali tal-armata huma l-ewwel li jintlaqtu mill-konsegwenzi ta’ din il-policy.”
