It’s in your interest to vote GREEN for the upcoming Local Council Elections

“It is necessary to have councillors who are able to look at the locality in its entirety with a vision for the future. Because the councils should not be considered as the front desk of the office of the Central Government’s customer care,” said the Chairperson of ADPD – The Green Party Sandra Gauci when she addressed a news conference in Marsaskala together with the candidate who is standing for election on behalf of the party in the locality on June 8: Brian Decelis.

ADPD Chairperson Sandra Gauci wished a Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers. Turning to the subject of today’s press conference, she said that “It’s in your interest to vote GREEN for the upcoming Local Council Elections.  It’s in your interest to have people who work to strive for transparency, good governance, political will and the strengthening of local democracy. It’s in your interest to have someone who is committed to this and in the process keep residents informed on everything that concerns the locality.”

It’s in your interest to have local councils that are responsible for residential roads, greening your towns and villages with more indigenous trees, working to invest in local public libraries and striving to protect open spaces.

Gauci said: “We work to increase the areas reserved for people through pedestrianisation, so that we will have cleaner air and safer urban areas. The number of bicycle racks around the neighbourhood will increase. The role of Transport Malta should be one of a regulator, primarily to supervise and assist the Local Councils rather than overtake them in the management of the locality. The outdoor catering facilities policy should fall under the Local Councils and the Land Authority should pass the information on the permits that were issued. It must be conducted mainly in the interest of the residents and of the local economy. Tourist operators should not be allowed to dictate how things are run.

It is necessary to have councillors who are able to look at the locality in its entirety with a vision for the future. Local Councils should never be considered as the customer care front desk of the Office of the Central Government.  Therefore, remember that it’s in your interest to vote GREEN for the upcoming Local Council elections, concluded Gauci.

For the upcoming Local Council elections, ADPD – The Green Party is putting forward the following candidates in these locations: Attard – Dr. Ralph Cassar; Balzan – Samuel Vella; Birkirkara – Mark Zerafa; Birżebbuġa – Dr. Melissa Bagley; Marsascala – Brian Decelis; Pieta’ – Janet Zahra Walker; and St Paul’s Bay – Sandra Gauci

The candidate standing on behalf of ADPD for Marsaskala Brian Decelis said that the party, including its predecessor Alternattiva Democratika, has always worked so that this locality will continue to be protected. It has consistently spoken against the taking of land in Żonqor for the so-called American University of Malta, and together with the Marsascala residents it has strongly objected to the project proposed for a marina. The party has also insisted on having the site of the former Jerma Palace Hotel be restored to its original state.

In more recent times, ADPD has spoken about the rampant development of buildings in the locality threatening to destroy the urban fabric of this locality. “We objected, and we continue to object to having virgin land given for development.  And together with the residents of other localities, we are asking that serious action be taken on the growing problem of chairs and tables lining the pavements and public spaces.

“Marsaskala should be treated as a residential town, and in spite of the fact that it is growing, the needs of the needs of the residents come before anything else”, concluded Decelis.

OTHER COMMENTS

ADPD Deputy Secretary General, Mario Mallia

Brian and I have known each other for many years, and you could say he was the one who instilled in me the urge to be active politically.  During the eighties we were militating within the so-called Youth of Numbers, at a time when protesting was considered a privilege.

Brian then joined Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) shortly after its founding and he was elected councillor in Fgura on behalf of AD.  Even during times when Brian was not politically active, his sense of social justice made him speak out when he witnessed the impending threat to the unique character of the seaside town of Marsaskala, the location he chose to settle in after returning from Australia.

Eventually he rejoined this party, nowadays known as ADPD, where he works mostly in the field of public relations. I’m sure that with the various experiences that Brian has had, including professional involvement in the field of education, he can ensure that the natural and urban environment of Marsaskala properly is looked after. Therefore, I encourage the residents of this locality to vote for Brian Decelis on behalf of ADPD.

Former Alternattiva Demokratika Local Council candidate for Marsascala, Daniel Desira.

Civic activist and longtime summer resident Daniel Desira stated that “Brian Decelis is the candidate who, as a private citizen with no connection to the local council, has publicly supported safeguarding the natural heritage and open spaces of Marsascala.  While others chose to communicate their disapproval of the marina internally, so as not to challenge the whims of their party, Decelis went all out.

“Decelis is actively campaigning to reclaim the pavements from excess commercialization and has faced threats from a known Marsaskala businessman. The Green candidate is also a selfless and dedicated member of the Marsaskala Residents Network, spending his time and energy engaging in tasks such as organizing events and planting trees.”

ADPD Deputy Chairperson, Dr Melissa Bagley

I have known Brian Decelis as a party member since ADPD was founded.  He is concerned about Green issues – environmental issues, good governance, and social justice.  He takes community matters to heart – he has been quite vociferous about projects not in the interest of the Marsascala community, such as the proposed marina in Marsascala Bay.

Moreover, as a councillor, Marsascala stands to benefit from his expertise and skills.  He has extensive experience in management and communications, and is quite skilled at co-ordinating projects.  When you look at Brian, you have a person who not only takes the Green vision seriously, but also has the skills that will put that vision into action.  Marsascala has everything to gain from Brian as a councillor.

ADPD Deputy Chairperson, Carmel Cacopardo

Brian is a dedicated person who pours his energy into what he believes in, with great creativity.

He embraces the Green vision.  He is a true Green.

During his first election campaign for the local councils many years ago back in 1994, I followed him from a distance.  That day he was elected in the Fgura locality on behalf of the Alternattiva Demokratika (AD).

30 years have passed, and although like me, older with less hair, Brian is still full of the same drive and determination to roll up his sleeves to make a difference where possible.

This is our political commitment, that with our Green vision we make a difference in the lives of others, so that their lives are better.

There is much to be done at a local level. In every locality, there is a need for a council made up of people who are able to be proactive.

Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Brian. With him I had the opportunity to discuss and design the work of the party in different circumstances. In Brian I always found a person who was able to translate my few words (sometimes even telegraphically expressed) into effective work.

In the last general election, if Ralph (General Secretary of the Party) was my right hand, Brian, without a doubt, was my left hand.  Together, with the rest of the team, we organised the party and with the few resources we had, we managed to almost double the votes we got in the previous election.

The challenges in the locality are not too different. The issues we have to face are both environmental and good governance.

Brian has a good knowledge of what is in store for him, when, in another month I wish him to be elected. He is capable of being the voice of the young, of the vulnerable, of the residents abandoned by the authorities.

Next month, with Brian elected as a councillor, Marsaskala will have a person determined to defend its residents.  When we ensure that the smallest one among us is protected, we have a guarantee that we are looking after everyone. Brian is the man who will make a difference next month.

Good luck Brian.

ADPD’s candidate for Marsaskala Brian Decelis concluded this morning’s press conference by thanking these speakers for their kind words and wishing a Happy Mother’s Day.

Anke għall-Kunsilli Lokali jiswielek li tivvota AĦDAR

“Huwa neċessarju li jkollna Kunsilliera li jkunu kapaċi jħarsu lejn il-lokalità fit-totalità tagħha b’viżjoni għall-futur. Għax il-Kunsilli m’għandhomx ikunu kkunsidrati bħala l-front desk tal-uffiċċju tal-customer care tal-Gvern Ċentrali.” Dan qalitu ċ-Chairperson tal-ADPD-The Green Party Sandra Gauci meta indirizzat konferenza tal-aħbarijiet f’Marsaskala flimkien mal-kandidat li qiegħed iressaq f’ismu għall-elezzjoni tat-8 ta’ Ġunju: Brian Decelis

Iċ-Chairperson tal-ADPD Sandra Gauci bdiet billi awgurat il-Jum l-Omm it-tajjeb li qiegħed jiġi iċċelebrat f’din il-ġurnata. Hija qalet li għal-Kunsilli Lokali jiswielek li tivvota AĦDAR. Jiswielek li jkollok nies li jaħdmu biex tissaħħaħ it-trasparenza, il-governanza tajba, il-ħidma politika tal-Kunsill u t-tisħiħ tad-demokrazija lokali. Jiswielek ikollok min jimpenja ruħu u jkun ċar u tond mar-residenti u jżommhom infurmati fuq dak kollu li jikkonċerna l-lokalità.

Jiswilek ikollok Kunsilli Lokali responsabbli għal-politika dwar toroq residenzjali, li jħaddru ir-raħal b’aktar siġar indiġeni, li jaħdmu biex ikun hemm investiment fil-libreriji pubbliċi u li jaħdmu biex jipproteġu l-ispazji miftuħa.

Gauci qalet: “Naħdmu biex jiżdiedu ż-żoni riżervati għan-nies permezz tal-pedestrijanizzazzjoni, biex b’hekk ikollna arja aktar nadifa u żoni urbani aktar siguri. Jiżdiedu l-bicycle racks madwar il-lokal. Ir-rwol ta′ Transport Malta għandu jkun wieħed  ta′ regolatur, primarjament biex jissorvelja u jassisti lill-Kunsilli Lokali u mhux biex jissostitwih fit-tmexxija tal-lokalità. Il-politika dwar l-imwejjed u s-siġġijiet għandha taqa’ taħt il-Kunsilli Lokali u l-Awtorita’ tal-Artijiet għandi tgħaddi l-informazzjoni fuq il-permessi li inħarġu. Għandha titmexxa prinċipalment fl-interess tar-residenti u tal-ekonomija lokali. L-operaturi turistiċi m’għandhomx jitħallew jibqgħu jiddettaw.

Huwa neċessarju li jkollna Kunsilliera li jkunu kapaċi jħarsu lejn il-lokalità fit-totalità tagħha b’viżjoni għall-futur. Għax il-Kunsilli m’għandhomx ikunu kkunsidrati bħala l-front desk tal-uffiċċju tal-customer care tal-Gvern Ċentrali. Għalhekk fit-8 ta’ Ġunju anke għal-Kunsilli Lokali jiswielek li tivvota AĦDAR, temmet tgħid Gauci.

Għal dawn l-elezzjonijiet ADPD-The Green Party qiegħed iressaq kandidati f’dawn il-lokalitajiet: Attard – Dr Ralph Cassar; Balzan – Samuel Vella; Birkirkara – Mark Zerafa;
Birżebbuġa – Dr Melissa Bagley; Marsaskala – Brian Decelis; Pieta’ – Janet Zahra Walker; u San Pawl il-Baħar – Sandra Gauci

Il-kandidat f’isem l-ADPD għal Marsaskala – Brian Decelis – qal li il-partit, inkluż il-predeċussur tiegħu l-Alternattiva Demokrata minn dejjem ħadem biex din il-lokalita’ tibqa’ tiġi imħarsa. Kien minn ta’ quddiem li ipprotesta kontra it-teħid ta’ art fiż-Żonqor għall-hekk imsejħa universita’ Amerikana ta’ Malta; ilu jisħaq li is-sit fejn kien qabel il-Jerma Palace Hotel jitreġġa lura għall-istat oriġinali tiegħu; u flimkien mar-residenti oġġeżżjona bil-qawwa kollha għall-proġett propost għal marina.

Fi żminijiet aktar riċenti l-ADPD tkellem dwar l-iżvilupp sfrenat ta’ bini li għaddej fil-lokalita’ u li qiegħed jhedded li jeqred it-tessut urban ta’ din il-lokalita’. “Oġġezzjonajna u inkomplu noġġezzjonaw li art li għadha verġni tibqa’ tingħata għal bini. U flimkien mar-residenti ta’ lokalitaijiet oħra qegħdin nitolbu li tittieħed azzjoni bis-serjeta’ dwar il-problema dejjem tikber ta’ siġġijiet u imwejjed li qegħdin jingubraw il-bankini u spazji pubbliċi.

“Marsaskala għandha tibqa’ tiġi trattata bħala belt residenzjali li minkejja li qegħda tikber għandha tibqa’ tħares il-ħtiġijiet tar-residenti, qabel kull ħaga ohra”, temm jgħid Decelis.

KUMMENTI OĦRA

Id-Deputat Segretarju Ġenerali tal-ADPD, Mario Mallia

Jiena u Brian ilna nafu lil xulxin għal ħafna snin u tista’ tgħid li kien hu li bdieli l-attiviżmu politiku tiegħi. Fi żmien it-tmenijiet konna nimmilitaw fi ħdan l-hekk imsejjha Żgħażagħ tan-Numri meta li tipprotesta kien ikkunsidrat privileġġ.

Brian imbagħad ingħaqad mal-Alternattiva Demokratika ftit wara it-twaqqif tagħha u kien elett kunsillier f’isem l-AD fil-lokalita’ ġara għal hawn tal-Fgura. Għalkemm iċ-ċirkostanzi tal-ħajja fissru li Brian ma baqgħax attiv politikament, is-sens ta’ ġustizzja soċjali ma ħalliehx ma jitkellimx meta beda jara diversi kontradizzjonijiet li bdew jitwettqu f’Marsaskala, il-lokalita’ li għażel li joqgħod fiha wara li rritorna minn perjodu ta’ żmien fl-Awstralja.

Eventwalment reġa ingħaqad ma’ dan il-partit, illum ADPD, fejn jaħdem l-aktar fil-qasam tar-relazzjonijiet pubbliċi. Jien ċert li bl-esperjenzi varji li kellu Brian anke professjonalment fil-qasam tal-edukazzjoni jista’ jikkontribwixxi biex l-ambjent urban u naturali ta’ Marsaskala jiġi imħares kif jixraq. Għalhekk inħeġġeġ lir-residenti ta’ din il-lokalita’ biex fit-8 ta’ Ġunju jivvotaw lil Brian Decelis f’isem l-ADPD..

Ex-kandidat f’isem l-Alternattiva Demokratika fuq Marsaskala, Daniel Desira

Civic activist and longtime summer resident Daniel Desira stated that “Brian Decelis is the candidate who from outside the council, has demonstrated out in the open to safeguard the locality’s natural heritage and open spaces. Whilst others chose to signal their disapproval of the marina internally just as if not to challenge the whims of their party, Decelis went all out.

“Decelis is actively campaigning to reclaim the pavements from excess commercialisation and faced threats from a known Marsaskala businessman. The Green candidate is also a selfless and dedicated member of the Marsaskala Residents Network who has spent time and energy with tasks like organising events and planting trees.”

Id-Deputat Chairperson tal-ADPD, il-Perit Carmel Cacopardo

Brian hu persuna mimlija enerġija. Hu dedikat. Jiffoka l-enerġija tiegħu b’mod kreattiv favur dak li jemmen fih.

Għandu viżjoni ħadra. Hu aħdar ta’ veru.

Segwejtu mill-bogħod snin twal ilu waqt l-ewwel kampanja elettorali għall-Kunsilli Lokali fl-1992. Dakinnhar kien ġie elett fil-lokalità tal-Fgura għan-nom ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika.

Għaddew 32 sena, u għalkemm bħali,  b’inqas xagħar, għadu mimli bl-istess ħeġġa u determinazzjoni li fejn hu possibli jmidd għonqu għall-ħidma biex jagħmel id-differenza.

Dan hu l-impenn politiku tagħna, li bil-viżjoni ħadra tagħna nagħmlu differenza fil-ħajja tal-oħrajn, biex ħajjithom tkun aħjar.

Hemm ħafna xi jsir fuq livell ta’ lokalità. F’kull lokalità hemm ħtieġa ta’ Kunsill magħmul min-nies li kapaċi jkunu proattivi.

Tul dawn l-aħħar snin, kelli l-opportunità li naħdem mill-viċin ma’ Brian. Miegħu kelli l-opportunità li niddiskuti u nfassal il-ħidma tal-partit f’ċirkustanzi differenti.  Fi Brian dejjem sibt persuna li kienet kapaċi tittraduċi l-ftit kliem tiegħi (kultant anke espress b’mod telegrafiku) f’ħidma effettiva.

Fl-elezzjoni ġenerali li għaddiet, jekk Ralph (Segretarju Ġenerali tal-Partit) kien l-id il-leminija tiegħi, Brian, bla ebda dubju kien l-id ix-xellugija tiegħi, biex, flimkien mal-kumplament tat-tim organizzajna l-partit aħjar u bil-ftit riżorsi li kellna irnexxielna kważi nirduppjaw il-voti li ksibna.

L-isfidi fil-lokalità mhux wisq differenti. L-issues li irridu niffaċċjaw huma kemm dawk ambjentali kif ukoll ta’ governanza tajba.

Brian għandu għarfien tajjeb ta’ dak li hemm lest għalih, meta, xahar ieħor nawguralu li jkun elett. Hu kapaċi jkun leħen taż-żgħir, tal-vulnerabbli, tar-resident abbandunat mill-awtoritajiet.

Ix-xahar id-dieħel, bi Brian elett bħala kunsillier, Marsaskala jkollha biex jirrappreżentaha persuna determinata li tiddefendi liż-żgħir.  Meta nassiguraw li jkun imħares l-iċken wieħed fostna, għandna l-garanzija li nkunu qed inħarsu lil kulħadd. Brian hu l-bniedem li xahar ieħor jagħmel id-differenza.

Awguri Brian.

Il-kandidat tal-ADPD għall-kunsill lokali ta’ Marsaskala Brian Decelis ikkonkluda il-konferenza stampa ta’ dalgħodu billi irringrazzja lil kelliema għal kliem ta’ inkoraġġiment tagħhom u awgura lill-ommijiet kollha f’dan il-jum iddedikat għalihom.
