AD salutes the birth of a post-Gaddafi Libya

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party salutes the Libyan revolution which leads to a post-Gaddafi era. The celebration of freedom of common Libyan people in the streets of Tripoli is a true symbol of what making history is all about. The Libyan opposition, with the aid of the international community has finally got rid of the brutal Gaddafi regime. We augur that other brutal dictatorships are done away with”.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, stated: “We salute and congratulate the Libyan people who overthrew the regime led by a ruthless tyrant. It is now imperative that the transitional government ensures that there are no reprisals or vindictive actions by the winning faction. The new Libya should be built on the concept of respect of basic human rights as well as the rights of all minorities. The rule of law is to be the guiding light of the new Libya”.

Robert Callus, AD spokesperson for Citizenship and Migration said: “It is also imperative that the EU assists the democratic process as well as pressure the new leaders to ratify the Geneva Convention for Refugees like all other democratic countries have done, as well as allowing the UNHCR to operate once again in Libya. While the West couldn’t dictate what type of democracy the new Libya will have, it is imperative that that the most fundamental human rights are respected.”

Ic-celebrazzjonijiet tal-helsien li qed isiru fit-toroq ta’ Tripli mill-poplu Libjan huma simbolu veru ta’ xi jfisser tkun parti mill-istorja. L-oppozizzjoni Libjana, bl-ghajnuna tal-komunita’ internazzjonali fl-ahhar irnexxielha tehles mir-regim brutali ta’ Gaddafi. Ahna nawguraw li aktar mexxejja dittatorjali jitnehhew mill-poter.”

Issa jehtieg li l-gvern transitorju jara li ma jkunx hemm atti ta’ tpattija jew ta’ vendikazzjoni minn dawk rebbieha. Il-Libja l-gdida ghandha tinbena fuq il-kuncett ta’ rispett lejn drittijiet bazici umani kif ukoll id-drittijiet tal-minoranzi kollha. Filwaqt li l-Punent ma jistax jiddetta x’tip ta’ demokrazija ser ikollha l-Libja l-gdida, huwa essenzjali li d-drittijiet tal-bniedem l-aktar fundamentali jigu rispettati”.
