Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party insists that Government is giving the wrong impression, that solidarity can somehow be put under quarantine. AD Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said that Government declarations that immigrants escaping Libya and those rescued from drowning will not be helped are plain wrong.
The decision to let in 66 rescued migrants on Good Friday was the right decision. However the Covid19 crisis does not absolve Government of its international obligations. Government is morally obliged to rescue people in distress, not to mention legal obligations under international and EU law.
AD supports NGOs which work in the area of migration and supports their stance that Government has no legal basis for its decisions on detention.
There are no limits to solidarity, whatever the Prime Minister says. Yes, Malta has every right to demand help, particularly from EU member states, but Government should stop conjuring up excuses to shirk from its responsibilities.

Is-solidarjetà mhix fuq kwarantina
Alternattiva Demokratika tiġbed l-attenzjoni tal-Gvern li s-solidarjetà mhix fuq kwarantina. Dan qalu Carmel Cacopardo Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika b’reazzjoni għad-dikjarazzjoni li minħabba l-kriżi Covid19 il-portijiet Maltin huma magħluqin għall-opri tal-baħar b’immigranti maħruba u meħlusa mill-għarqa.
Waqt li naqblu mad-deċiżjoni li tħallew jidħlu Malta is-66 immigrant sbieħ il-Ġimgħa l-Kbira, Alternattiva Demokratika temfasizza li l-kriżi Covid19 ma tħollx lill-pajjiż mill-obbligi tiegħu. Kemm obbligi morali kif ukoll obbligi taħt il-liġi internazzjonali u Ewropea.
Alternattiva Demokratika tappoġġa lill-Għaqdiet mhux Governattivi li jaħdmu mal-immigranti fil-pożizzjoni li ħadu li ma hemm l-ebda bażi legali għall-politika ta’ detenzjoni li għandu l-Gvern.
Kuntrarju għal dak li qed jingħad is-solidarjetà tagħna bħala pajjiż ma għandha tkun soġġetta għall-ebda limitu. Iva għandna dritt li nkunu mgħejjuna nerfgħu dan il-piż, imma l-ebda skuża, inkluż il-kriżi attwali tal-Covid19, ma tista’ tħollna mir-responsabbiltajiet tagħna kkonkluda Carmel Cacopardo.
