President's request for pluralism supported by AD

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party welcomed President George Abela’s demand, during a televised interview (Reporter), for the advancement of a pluralistic society in Malta.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD Spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said: “It is heartening to see our President living fully up to the best democratic standards and practices of the European Union. By questioning whether our country wants to remain a “two party state” and by condemning the “winner takes all” mentality prevalent in Malta, President Abela is proving that his thinking is in tune with what many progressive Europeans and Maltese are thinking, despite the desperate quest for a status quo by both the PN and the PL”.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said: “The current situation shows that a 2-party system does not necessarily guarantee a stable democracy. AD’s election in parliament would result in a new political context based on dialogue, responsibility and reform, as is the norm in the EU with multi-party parliaments. This is the direct opposite of the current situation which is based on threats, statelemate and coalitions of individuals”.
