Climate change – EU and Malta must act now, says AD

Following the report published on 27 September by the panel of thousands of scientists of the United Nation’s ‘Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’, AD joins the European Greens in calling for a public investment programme and long term policies on clean and renewable energy sources.

Ralph Cassar, AD spokesperson for energy, industry and transport, said:”Moving towards a fossil-fuel free and renewable energy economy will mean that Malta will invest in clean air for its citizens and reduce dependence on foreign sources of energy, leaving more money in the local economy. This will also mean the creation of new jobs in the clean energy sector. As we have insisted over the years, long term greenhouse reduction targets and policies should be adopted, to ensure long term investor certainty and promote job security and good job conditions in the sector. Government cannot remain issuing short term initiatives in this sector – something which is penalising both small companies and workers.”

Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: “Malta should make a strong effort to ensure that the 2020 target of 10% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is not only reached, but actually surpassed. The whole Maltese population would thus benefit from cleaner air quality and better health.”

Wara r-rapport ippubblikat fis-27 ta’ Settembru minn bord ta’ eluf ta’ xjentisti tal-‘Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’ tal-Ġnus Magħquda, AD tingħaqad mal-Greens Ewropej fis-sejħa għal programm ta’ investiment pubbliku u politika fit-tul fir-rigward ta’ sorsi ta’ enerġija nadifa u li tiġġedded.

Ralph Cassar, kelliem ta’ AD għall-energija, industrija u trasport, qal:”Irridu nersqu lejn ekonomija ibbażata fuq enerġija li tiġġedded u li ma tiddependix miż-żejt ikun ifisser li Malta tkun qed tinvesti f’arja nadifa għaċ-ċittadini tagħha, tnaqqas id-dipendenza fuq sorsi ta’ enerġija barranin u tħalli aktar flus fl-ekonomija lokali. Dan ikun ifisser ukoll il-ħolqien ta’ impiegi ġodda fis-settur tal-enerġija nadifa. Bħal ma dejjem insistejna matul is-snin, jeħtieg li jiġu mfassla għanijiet u politika fuq medda ta’ żmien biex jiġu stabbiliti miri biex jitnaqqas l-effett serra. Dan jiżgura ċertu serħan tal-moħħ fit-tul għall-investituri u jippromwovi s-sigurta’ u kundizzjonijiet tajbin fl-impiegi f’dan is-settur.  Il-Gvern ma jistax jibqa’ joħrog inizjattivi li ma jħarsux fit-tul f’dan is-settur – politika li qed tippenalizza kemm kumpaniji zgħar kif ukoll haddiema.”

Iċ-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika Prof. Arnold Cassola, qal: “Jeħtieg li Malta tagħmel sforz kbir biex il-mira tal-2020 li jitnaqqsu l-emissjonijiet tal-gas serra b’10% mhux biss tintleħaq imma li naqbżuha.  Il-popolazzjoni kollha ta’ Malta għalhekk tkun qegħda tgawdi minn arja nadifa u kwalita’ ta’ ħajja aħjar.”
