MEPA enforcement: better late than never

AD Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: “We support MEPA in its  enforcement action at Montecristo Estate. With an average area of 64,000 square metres owned by Polidano Bros being subject to enforcement notices, it is about time that MEPA woke up from its slumber.  Malta cannot be run by arrogant bullies, who flaunt the laws continuously because of their political connections.”

Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairperson and AD Spokesperson on Sustainable Development and Home Affairs, said that MEPA’s action yesterday is welcome even if it took MEPA seven years after the Joe Falzon Inquiry into the Xemxija incidents in 2006 had revealed that Polidano Brothers had well over 83 pending enforcement orders on sites under their control. Whilst the MEPA timing on the eve of a public demonstration by environmental NGOs is suspect, Cacopardo said that its better late than never.

Iċ-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, il-Professur  Arnold Cassola, qal “Nappoġġaw lill-MEPA fl-azzjoni tagħha ta’ infurzar f’Montekristo Estate. B’madwar 64,000 metru kwadru ta’ art propjeta’ ta’ Polidano Brothers soġġetta għal avviżi ta’ infurzar, tajjeb li fl-aħħar il-MEPA stenbħet. Malta ma tistax tibqa’ immexxija mill-arroganti li kontinwament jinjoraw il-liġijiet minħabba l-konnessjonijiet politiċi tagħhom.”

Carmel Cacopardo, Deputat Chairperson u kelliemi ta’ AD għall-Iżvilupp Sostenibbli u l-Intern, qal li  AD ħadet pjaċir bl-azzjoni li l-MEPA ħadet il-bierah avolja l-MEPA ħadet seba’ snin biex iċċaqalqet wara l-inkjesta immexxija minn Joe Falzon fl-2006 in konnessjoni mal-inkjesta tax-Xemxija li minnha kien irriżulta li Polidano Brothers kellhom iktar minn 83 avviż ta’ infurzar fuq siti taħt il-kontroll tagħhom. Filwaqt li l-ħin li fih il-MEPA aġixxiet lejliet demonstrazzjoni mill-għaqdiet ambjentali hu suspettuż, Cacopardo qal li aħjar tard milli qatt.
