Greens ask for emergency discussion on situation in Malta in EU Parliament

Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson Prof. Arnold Cassola has stated that the damage Konrad Mizzi, Keith Schembri and Brian Tonna have done to Malta’s reputation is getting worse by the minute. Indeed, following the continuous revelations regarding suspected money laundering in Malta on the part of Keith Schembri and associates, making use of the Pilatus Bank, the Green Group in the European Parliament has requested an urgent debate in plenary in the European Parliament next week, entitled “Panama Papers follow up: suspicion of money laundering in Malta involving several politically exposed persons”.  The decision on the agenda will be taken on Thursday.

Carmel Cacopardo, AD Deputy Chairperson added that it is pertinent to also remember that AD has asked the Auditor General in Malta to investigate the operation of the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA)  with reference to the issuance of Pilatus Bank operating licence. The request has been submitted and duly acknowledged by the National Audit Office.

Il-Greens jitolbu diskussjoni ta’ emerġenza fis-sessjoni plenarja tal-Parlament Ewropew il-ġimgħa d-dieħla

Iċ-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, il-Prof.  Arnold Cassola qal li l-ħsara li Konraad Mizzi, Keith Schembri u Brian Tonna qed jagħmu lir-reputazzjoni ta’ Malta qed itiżdied kull jum li jgħaddi. Infatti, wara ir-rivelazzjonijiet kontinwi rigward suspett ta’ ħasil ta’ flus f’Malta min-naħa ta’ Keith Schembri u l-assoċjati tiegħu, li għamlu użu mill-Pilatus bank, il-Grupp tal-Ħodor fil-Parlament Ewropew għamel talba għal diskussjoni urġenti fil-Parlament Ewropew il-Ġimgħa d-dieħla, bit-titlu: “Panama Papers follow up: suspicion of money laundering in Malta involving several politically exposed persons”. Id-deċiżjoni dwar l-aġenda tittieħed il-Ħamis.

Carmel Cacopardo, id-Deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika żied li huwa tajjeb li wieħed jiftakar li l-AD talbet lill-Awditur Ġenerali f’Malta biex jinvestiga l operat tal-MFSA (Awtorita’ Maltija għas-servizzi finanzjarji) rigward il-ħruġ ta’ liċenzja lil Pilatus Bank.  Din it-talba ġiet sottomessa u ‘acknowledged’ mill-Uffiċċju Nazzjonali tal-Verifika.
