Russian Military Aggression: ADPD calls for the immediate suspension of the Golden Passport Programme

Following the Russian government’s aggression against Ukraine we join the Greens in the European Parliament and insist that massive violations of international law and border shifts in Europe need to be met with a forceful reaction.  It is clear that the Russian President is further turning the escalation spiral, trying to rewrite history into an imperial narrative. We are all set to lose if international rules can be broken without consequences.

ADPD – The Green Party Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said:”Our European continent is in grave danger. At this crucial moment in European history, I appeal to both Robert Abela and Bernard Grech, in their respective capacities as caretaker Prime Minister and caretaker Leader of the Opposition so we all set our political differences aside and show the Government of the Russian Federation that we condemn the acts of aggression in the Ukraine.

Moreover, let us send a united message that Malta will not be used as a way for Russia to infiltrate Europe, so long as it continues its actions in Ukraine. I therefore appeal to each other leader: We must present a united front.

I call for the immediate suspension of the Golden Passport programme. At this stage it is now clearer than ever that the programme poses a risk to our collective European security. It is not possible to know who is trying to take advantage of the terms of the scheme in order to put Europe at risk. I also call on Maltese Authorities to put all Maltese passports issued to holders of Russian passports under review and for details of such passport holders to be shared among the European security establishment as a matter of urgency.

It is our collective duty to ensure that Malta is on the right side of history. We must not undermine the collective European response, which must be strong and proportionate. This is not the time for profit, but time to do the right thing.”

Aggressjonu Militari Russa: ADPD titlob is-sospensjoni immedjata ta’ l-Iskema tal-Bejgħ tal-passaporti

Hekk kif bdiet l-aggressjoni militari tal-gvern Russu kontra l-Ukrajna ningħaqdu mal-Ħodor fil-Parlament Ewropew u ninsistu li l-ksur flagranti tal-liġi internazzjonali u l-attentat tal-Predident Russu biex iċaqlaq il-fruntieri fl-Ewropa jintlaqgħu b’reazzjoni qawwija. Jidher ċar li l-President Russu qed ikompli jrewwaħ u jipponta għal gwerra perikoluża, u qed jipprova jikteb mill-ġdid l-istorja f’narrattiva imperjali. Ħadd ma joħroġ rebbieħ jekk ir-regoli internazzjonali jinkisru mingħajr konsegwenzi.

Iċ-Chairperson ta’ ADPD – The Green Party Carmel Cacopardo qal: “Il-kontinent Ewropew jinsab f’periklu serju. F’dan il-mument kruċjali fl-istorja Ewropea, nappella kemm lil Robert Abela kif ukoll lil Bernard Grech, fil-kapaċitajiet rispettivi tagħhom bħala Prim Ministru caretaker u Kap tal- Oppożizzjoni caretake biex inwarrbu d-differenzi politiċi tagħna u nuru lill-Gvern tal-Federazzjoni Russa li nikkundannaw l-atti ta’ aggressjoni fl-Ukrajna.

Barra minn hekk, ejjew nibagħtu messaġġ magħqud li Malta mhux se tintuża bħala mezz biex ir-Russja tinfiltra fl-Ewropa, sakemm tkompli bl-azzjonijiet tagħha fl-Ukrajna. Għalhekk nappella lil kulħadd biex nippreżentaw front magħqud.

Nappella għas-sospensjoni immedjata ta’ l-iskema tal-bejgħ tal-passaporti. Issa huwa aktar ċar aktar minn qatt qabel li l-programm joħloq riskju għas-sigurtà kollettiva Ewropea tagħna. Hemm riskju li l-programm jintuża biex ipoġġi s-sigurtà tagħna f’riskju. Nappella wkoll l-awtoritajiet Maltin biex tpoġġi l-passaporti Maltin kollha maħruġa lil dawk b’passaporti Russi taħt skrutinju u biex dettalji ta’ tali detenturi Russi ta’ passaporti jiġu skrutinati wkoll minn aġenziji tas-sigurtà tal-UE b’urġenza.

Huwa dmir kollettiv tagħna li nassiguraw li Malta tkun fuq in-naħa t-tajba tal-istorja u turi li mhux aċċettabbli li pajjiż b’saħħtu jinvadi pajjiż ieħor. M’għandniex indgħajfu r-rispons kollettiv Ewropew, li għandu jkun b’saħħtu u proporzjonat. Dan mhux iż-żmien għall-profitt mill-bejgħ skandaluż tal-passaporti, iżda huwa ż-żmien li tittieħed azzjoni deċisiva.”
