Public Inquiry Report on Jean Paul Sofia’s death – Malta, the country where anything goes

Reacting to the Public Inquiry Report on Jean Paul Sofia’s death published today, ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson, Sandra Gauci said that the report’s findings are the result of successive governments being in the developers’ pockets. This has led to a high level of incompetence and a mismanaged public administration, leading to several deaths, the latest being that of Jean Paul Sofia.

Gauci said that it is pertinent to remember that the Prime Minister never wanted the Public Inquiry to take place, and attempted to the last minute to create various obstacles to it. Today however he shamelessly flaunts it as though it were a feather in his cap. This report has seen the light of day thanks to Jean Paul’s mother. Isabelle Bonnici’s persistence, with the support of the many people, who took to the streets forced Abela had to back down and concede.  This death should never have happened but this is what happens when the country is neck deep in impunity, where anything goes.

Gauci expressed serious doubts on whether the government will adopt the report’s recommendations given the proximity of the developers to the other political parties. This sector has always been afforded privileged treatment. It is this cowboy’s attitude which led to Jean Paul’s death.

ADPD calls for resignations and investigations into Malta Enterprise and INDIS, the entities which approved this project in a superficial manner, according to the board of inquiry.

Self-regulation in every aspect of the construction industry, associated professions included must end immediately. As in the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the state was a ‘collaborator’ which facilitated and encouraged a state of permissiveness, carelessness, and impunity in respect of an entire industry and for this, the state must bear responsibility. This free for all attitude and anything goes mentality is having catastrophic consequences on a national scale. We want accountability and resignations, ended Gauci.

Rapport ta’ inkjesta Jean Paul Sofia – Malta, il-pajjiż fejn kollox jgħaddi

B’reazzjoni għar-rapport ta’inkjesta wara il-mewt ta’ Jean Paul Sofia ippubblikat illum, iċ-Chairperson tal-ADPD-The Green Party Sandra Gauci qalet li dak li fih ir-rapport huwa frott ta’ meta pajjiż li jkollok gvern wara l-ieħor fil-but tal-iżviluppaturi. Frott ta’ gvernijiet li wasslu għal livell għoli ta’ inkompetenza u amministrazzjoni pubblika ħazina, li riżultat tagħha,  kellna bosta imwiet, l-aħħar wahda l-ħajja taż-żgħażugħ Jean Paul Sofia.

Gauci fakkret li dan ir-rapport il-Prim Ministru qatt ma riedu u għamel bosta ostakli biex ma jsirx. Illum qiegħed jippoża qisu għamel xi akkwist. Dan ir-rapport hu frott il-pressjoni li għamlet omm Jean Paul – Isabelle Bonnici, bl-għajnuna ta’ baħar ta’ nies li niżlu fit-toroq. Quddiem hekk Abela kellu jċedi. Din il-mewt qatt ma missha seħħet imma dan li tieħu meta jkollok pajjiż imtaqqal bl-impunità, fejn kollox jgħaddi.

Gauci esprimiet dubji serji dwar kemm il-gvern kien se jimxi mal-proposti li ħarġu minn dan ir-rapport, minħabba l-qrubija tal-iżviluppaturi mal-partiti l-oħra. Dan hu settur li ġie dejjem trattat b’mod privileġġjat. Huwa riżultat ta’ dan l-atteġġament ta’ cowboy li kellna l-mewt ta’ Jean Paul.

ADPD jitlob għar-riżenji u investigazzjoni fi ħdan il-Malta Enterprise u INDIS li approvaw din il-kostruzzjoni b’mod li fl-inkjesta ġie deskritt bħala superfiċjali.

L-awto-regolamentazzjoni għandha tieqaf minnufih f’kull qasam konness mal-industrija tal-kostruzzjoni. Inkluż fil-professjojnijiet assoċċjati. Bħal fil-każ ta Daphne Caruana Galizia l-istat aġevola sitwazzjoni ta’ permissiviżmu, laxkezza u mpunità lejn industrija sħiħa u ta’ dan għandu jerfa’ r-responsabilità. Din tax-xejn mhu xejn qed tħalli konsegwenzi katastrofiċi fuq il-pajjiż. Irridu kontabilità u riżenji, temmet tgħid Gauci.
