Discrimination still in place between Maltese citizens and EU citizens resident in Malta

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party said that discrimination in provision of public services is still in existence between Maltese and other EU citizens residing in Malta.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, stated:  “Despite having joined the EU over seven years ago, in certain areas the Maltese authorities have not realised that they cannot discriminate between Maltese and other EU residents in Malta.  For example, is unacceptable that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is being isued to EU residents by the Entitlement Unit of the Ministry only for one year as against the three year validity for Maltese citizens.  Such selective treatment amongst EU citizens all resident in Malta is not acceptable”.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “AD has been insisting on the end of discrimination in the provision of public services, not only on the basis of nationality, but also on the basis of other factors such as sexual orientation, and to date, we are the only Maltese political party that agrees with the proposed EU anti-discrimination directive”.
