In a press conference in Valletta prior to next week’s Paris COP21 Climate Change Summit AD Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: “In view of last week’s tragic and barbaric events in Paris, the holding for the COP 21 talks in Paris becomes even more relevant. The senseless terrorists would have wanted to instill so much fear as to have these negotiations disrupted. That is why it becomes even more important that things go on as planned. It is even for this reason that Alternattiva Demokratika is putting forward concrete proposals on climate change – to be implemented both locally and globally- together with the European Greens”.
Deputy Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo and spokesperson on sustainable development spoke on the effects of climate change on Malta saying: “Malta faces rising sea levels which could obliterate tourist facilities which are mostly developed along the coast. Weather extremes will test our infrastructure to the limit. An increase in temperatures and different rainwater patterns will impact our agriculture. A revised strategy to address climate change impacts is called for.”
Ralph Cassar, spokesperson on energy and transport said that AD is joining Green Parties around the world in making concrete proposals, based on a long term vision of a green and sustainable economy:”Alternattiva Demokratika is also proposing a radical overhaul of our mobility patterns which till today are based on fossil fuels and weak mass transportation infrastructure. Our country has more cars than the USA (802 per thousand versus 786 per thousand) and the lack of safety on our roads is discouraging people from using alternative means of transport. We are proposing: the conversion of all public transport vehicles to electric vehicles and renewable clean fuels; a plan so that all new private cars are electric cars by 2030; a light rail system crossing Malta along the major arteries u heavy investment in direct and safe bicycle and electric bicycle highways connecting localities in Malta and Gozo.”

PR21/11/2015 Il-bidla fil-klima – azzjoni internazzjonali meħtieġa
F’konferenza stampa l-Belt Valletta qabel il-Konferenza COP21 ta’ Pariġi l-ġimgħa d-dieħla dwar il-bidla fil-klima ċ-Chairperson ta’ AD, Prof. Arnold Cassola, qal: “Minkejja l-attakki teroristiċi tal-ġimgħa li għaddiet f’Pariġi huwa importanti li l-konferenza tant importanti dwar il-bidla fil-klima sseħħ xorta waħda. Ma nistgħux inħallu lil min itellef negozjati tant importanti għall-futur tad-dinja kollha. Alternattiva Demokratika qed tagħmel proposti konkreti fuq il-bidla fil-klima – kemm lokali, u flimkien mal-European Greens proposti internazzjonali biex il-bidla fil-klima tinżamm taħt iż-żewġ ċentigradi.”
Id-Deputat Chairperson u kelliem dwar l-iżvilupp sostenibbli Carmel Cacopardo tkellem dwar xi effetti tal-bidla fil-klima fuq Malta u Għawdex: “Malta tiffaċċja żieda fil-livell tal-baħar li jista’ jipperikola l-faċilitajiet turistiċi li l-biċċa l-kbira tagħhom huma mal-kosta. L-agrikoltura tiffaċċja wkoll żidiet fit-temperaturi, u bidla fil-istaġuni tax-xita. L-infrastruttura tal-pajjiż jiffaċċjaw estremitajiet fit-temp li ma tiflaħx għalihom. Hemm bżonn ta’ strateġija riveduta biex l-pajjiż jipprepara ruħu għall-impatti tal-bidla fil-klima.”
“Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party qed tipproponi bidla fil-mobilita’ minn dik li tiddependi mill-fjuwils fossili għal mobilita’ sostenibbli. “Malta għandha konċentrazzjoni qawwija ta’ karozzi privati (iżjed minn dik tal-Istati Uniti) u nuqqas ta’ infrastruttura u sigurta’ fit-toroq għal min juża mezzi alternattivi ta’ trasport. Għaldaqstant qed nipproponu: Il-konverżjoni tal-mezzi ta’ transport pubbliku għall-elettriku minn sorsi rinnovabbli u fjuwils rinnovabbli u sostenibbli; pjan biex il-karozzi privati ġodda jkunu kollha elettrici sas-sena 2030; light railway li taqsam Malta tul ir-rotot prinċipali u investiment f’rotot siguri għar-roti u roti elettriċi tul it-toroq arterjali kollha ta’ Malta u Għawdex.”
