AD has noted the statement made in a MEPA Press Conference that “the problem of illegal boathouses is bigger than MEPA”.
Carmel Cacopardo, AD Deputy Chairman and Spokesman on Sustainable Development and Home Affairs stated that the illegal boathouse issue has reached its present proportions because the politicians in charge have continuously placed a higher value on vote catching than on doing their duty of evicting squatters from public land.
Cacopardo added that the secret meetings held separately between Lawrence Gonzi and Alfred Sant and the squatters representatives at Armier prior to the 2008 general elections has further increased the role of politicians in trying to cover up this environmental mess.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “It is clear that the stagnant PNPL duopoly is doing its utmost to please the narrow interest of the Armier boathouse owners, to the detriment of the general public which has a right to enjoy public land. This is not surprising, as both parties do the same with big business developers who have transformed Malta into a permanent building site. If elected in Parliament, AD will do its utmost to change the situation.”
