Cassola Arnold

Arnold Cassola is a professor at the University of Malta. He has previously taught at the Universities of Catania (1981-1983) and Roma “La Sapienza” (1983-1988). He is the author of numerous publications,including around 30 books, which have been published in Malta, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Russia and Ukraine. He is co-founder of Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party (1989). In 1994 he was elected Swieqi Local Councillor. He was elected on the Executive Committee of the European Green Party (EGP) in 1997. In 1999 he was elected Secretary General of the European Green Party and then re-elected for a second three year term in 2003, with a 100% vote. In 2006 he was elected to the Italian Parliament. Mario Mallia graduated BEd(Hons) and MEd and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Administration and Management and a Diploma in Environmental Science. He is currently Head of School at St Albert the Great College with responsibilities for both the Primary and the Secondary Sectors. Elected as teacher and parent representative on a number of school councils. Active for many years in a number of NGOs. Occupied the post of secretary general and deputy chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika. An elected member of the Birkirkara Local Council 2003-2006 on behalf of Alternattiva Demokratika. Co-founder of Union Haddiema Hwienet. Elected representative on the University Students’ Council (KSU) for a number of years, serving as vice-president. Was responsible for editorial commentaries on national radios for a number of years. Contributor to a number of publications in the educational and political sphere. Member of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality since its inception in December 2003 and member on the Foundation of Educational Services (FES) board since 2009. Carmel Cacopardo graduated as an architect and civil engineer at the University of Malta. Holds postgraduate qualifications in sustainability and environmental management from Staffordshire University in the United Kingdom. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment of the UK. Has worked in both the public and the private sector. Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of Malta. Author of the book ‘Time for Radical Change – The Introduction of Eco-Taxation in Malta’. Angele Deguara is AD spokesperson for social policy and civil rights. She is a Senior Lecturer and Subject Coordinator of Sociology at the University of Malta Junior College. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and Social Studies, a B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Sociology and is currently reading for a Ph.D. in Anthropological Sciences at the University of Malta. She is the author of ‘Life on the Line: A Sociological Investigation of Women Working in a Clothing Factory in Malta’. Her academic interests include gender, work, poverty, religion, sexual relationships, teenage parenthood and development and she has contributed to a number of related publications and international conferences. She has been an active member of Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust (KKĠ), the only Fair Trade cooperative in Malta for a number of years. Angele is an animal lover and a vegetarian. She is married to Jesmond and has two teenage boys, David and Sam.

Robert Callus is a social worker by profession and has worked in the field of the elderly for the last 11 years. He has been involved in AD’s Youth Section – ADŻ since 2007 and his special interests are minority rights, civil liberties and upholding democracy.
Agius Silvan

Silvan Agius has dedicated the past decade to human rights work and activism, with a particular focus on gender and lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) equality. He is based in Brussels where he works for ILGA-Europe as the Policy Director – a position that he held for the past 5 years. Prior to that he was based in Malta and worked at the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE) as a Principal Officer. He co-authored the European Commission’s ground breaking publication ‘Trans and intersex people: Discrimination on the grounds of sex, gender identity and gender expression’ (2012) and holds a BA(Hons.) in Anthropology and an MA in Human Rights & Democratisation. Ralph Cassar has been active in various roles with the Green Party since 1992. He is currently the party’s Secretary General and spokesperson on energy, IT and transport. As a student he was active as a students’ council member in Sixth Form. Ralph had served as a green local councillor in Ħ’Attard between 1994 and 1998, 2007 and 2012 and is currently serving a third term as local councillor in Ħ’Attard. Amongst his priorities as a councillor are improving the recyclables collection scheme, educational, cultural and sports activities, planting of indigenous trees, the defence of open spaces and the introduction of green technology in the locality. He has worked in the manufacturing industry for ten years in various roles related to quality and product development and with a public agency on technical regulations. He has also taught chemistry in secondary schools. He holds a BSc in chemistry with computer studies, an MBA from the University of Malta, and an MSc in Science from the Open University (UK). Michael Briguglio is Chairperson and Spokesperson for Economic Policy and Culture of Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party. He is the father of David and lectures in Sociology at the University of Malta. He holds a BA (Hons.) and an MA, both in sociology from the University of Malta. He is reading for a PhD in Sociology, which is in its final stages and has authored various academic papers on environment, politics and social policy from a sociological perspective. Michael is a Local Councillor in Sliema, and has been active in Alternattiva Demokratika since 1998 and in progressive NGOs since 1994, including Moviment Graffitti (which he co-founded) and Zminijietna. He is a member of the Core Group of the Malta-EU Steering Action Committee, and was a co-founder of various civil rights and environmental movements such as the ‘Yes’ movement for the introduction of divorce in Malta; the Front against the golf course in Rabat. Camilleri David

David Camilleri was born in Rabat, Ghawdex, on 06.09.1962. Attended the Primary School in Nadur and the Seminary in Rabat. At 18 years old David moved to New York City for work. ”There I held all kinds of jobs, while attending the Art Student’s League for many years, becoming an artist and attending college part time. While restoring buildings and apartments I took time to travel. For three years I backpacked through out the world- i. e. traveling with the nomads in Mongolia, climbing up to Macho Pichu…Finally I got married. In 2010 we moved back to Malta. Now we live in Qala, with four children and several animals.” Beside art, architecture and social justice, David has always been interested in the environment, sustainable development and the humane treatment of animals.
