When Government led by the PN permits trapping year in year out it is being irresponsible.
Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairperson of AD – The Green Party and its spokesperson on Sustainable Development and Home Affairs said that when Malta signed the treaty of adhesion to the EU it committed itself to phase out trapping in the Maltese islands. During these eight years Government wasted its time and did not take any concrete measure to solve the issue of trapping, in the interest of both trappers themselves and the population at large.
Cacopardo pointed out that on 27th February 2012 the European Commission had emphasised the need that Malta enhances the protection of birds migrating through malta in autumn. Commissioner Potocnik had issued a reasoned opinion in which he admonished Malta to implement properly bird protection legislation. He also warned Government that the matter could be referred to the European Court of Justice should n
reply be submitted.
In view of this Government’s decision to issue regulations permitting trapping of the Song Thrush (malvizz) and the Golden Plover (pluviera)
is irresponsible as government is playing a political game with the trappers.
AD-The Green party condemns the actions of a government led by the PN and supports Birdlife Malta for the serious way it has conducted itself.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson stated “It is condemnable how both the PN and the PL try to dance to the tune of the hunters’ and trappers organisations when Malta’s entry into the EU had to bring about changes enhancing the protection of birds. AD is the only political party contesting the general election which has a clear policy on the rights and protection of animals.”

Insib: Il-Gvern qed ikun irresponsabbli
Meta l-Gvern immexxi mill-PN qed johrog sena wara l-ohra regolamenti li jippermettu l-insib qieghed ikun irresponsabbli.
Carmel Cacopardo, Deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika u kelliemi ghall-Izvilupp Sostenibbli u l-Intern qal li meta Malta iffirmat it-trattat ta’ adezjoni fl-Unjoni Ewropeja intrabtet li fi zmien hames snin kellha tiehu mizuri biex l-insib fil-gzejjer Maltin jinqata’ ghal kollox. Kienu tmien snin li l-Gvern hela u ma ha l-ebda azzjoni konkreta biex isolvi din il-problema tal-insib, kemm ghan-nassaba kif ukoll ghall-poplu.
Cacopardo fakkar li nhar is-27 ta’ Frar tal-2012, il-Kummissjoni Ewropeja hegget lill Malta biex ittejjeb il-harsien tal-ghasafar li jpassu min fuq Malta fil-harifa. Il-Kummissarju tal-Ambjent Potocnik, baghat ‘reasoned opinion’ fejn wissa lil Malta biex timplementa b’mod korrett il-legislazzjoni tal-harsien tal-ghasafar, fejn ukoll qal lill-Gvern li jekk fi zmien xahrejn Malta ma tirrispondiex il-Kummissjoni setghet tirreferi l-kas lill-Qorti Ewropeja tal-Gustizzja.
Fid-dawl ta’ dan id-decizjoni tal-Gvern li johrog regolamenti li jippermettu l-insib ghall-malvizz u l-pluviera hi irresponsabbilta fil-loghba politika li l-Gvern qed jilghab man-nassaba.
Alternattiva Demokratika tikkundanna l-azzjoni tal-Gvern immexxi mill-PN u taghti l-appogg shih taghha lil Birdlife Malta ghall-mod serju u konsistenti li agixxiet bih.
Michael Briguglio, Chairperson ta’ AD, qal: “Hija xi haga ta’ l-ghib li kemm il-PN kif ukoll il-PL qed jaghmlu hilithom biex jinghogbu mal-ghaqdiet li jirraprezentaw lill-kaccaturi u lin-nassaba, meta d-dhul ta’ Malta fl-UE kellha ggib maghha bidliet favur il-harsien ta’ l-ghasafar. Alternattiva Demokratika hija l-uniku partit li ser tikkontesta l-elezzjoni generali li ghandha politika cara favur id-drittijiet u l-harsien ta’ l-annimali”.
