Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party launched a framework for a sustainable mobility plan which aims for sustainable planning and improved quality of life of residents. The plan is co-authored by Ralph Cassar and Denise Attard-Sacco.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “A sustainable mobility plan should be adopted by authorities and local councils to ensure that quality of life of residents is given top priority. As things stand, Malta is characterised by too much traffic, too much pollution and lack of space for pedestrians. A sustainable transport policy would ensure safe speed limits and proper access to children, the elderly, persons with disability and cyclists, among others. Public transport should be more accessible to help reduce dependency on cars”.
Ralph Cassar, AD Attard Local Councillor said that Transport Malta had replied about the proposal for 30kph in all residential streets. “I am pleased to note that the concept has been accepted in at least some streets, although I would have preferred had all residential streets in all the residential local streets are all designated as 30kph zones. The concept of ‘home zones’ has also been adopted as a concept in Transport Malta’s consultation document on speed limits”.
“As regards the sustainable mobility plan what we did is propose how to start tackling the issue of sustainable mobility through projects which local councils with the help of other authorities can embark on. The ideas in the report have been tried and tested elsewhere. The report is only the start – we hope it inspires residents, decision makers and organisations to join forces, make proposals and work together to start tackling the problems heavy traffic in our localities is causing.”
The report is being sent to Transport Malta and local councils.

Transport – AD Tniedi Pjan ta’ Mobilita’
Alternattiva Demokratika nidiet qafas ta’ pjan ta’ mobilita’ sostenibbli bl-ghan taz-zvilupp sostenibbli u t-titjib kwalita’ ta’ hajja tar-residenti. Il-pjan inkiteb minn Ralph Cassar u Denise Attard-Sacco.
Michael Briguglio, Chairperson tal-AD, qal: “Il-qafas ta’ pjan ta’ mobilita’ sostenibbli ghandu jigi addottat mill-awtoritajiet u l-kunsilli lokali biex jizguraw li il-kwalita’ tal-hajja tar-residenti tinghata l-ghola prijorita’. Kif inhuma l-affarijiet bhalissa, Malta hija kkarettarizzata minn traffiku u tniggis zejjed u nuqqas ta’ spazju ghan-nies mexjin fit-triq. Politika ta’ transport sostenibbli tizgura limiti ta velocita’ siguri u access xieraq ghat-tfal, l-anzjani u persuni b’dizabilita u ciklisti fost ohrajn. It-transport pubbliku ghandu jkun aktar accessibli biex jghin it-tnaqqis tad-dependenza fuq il-karozzi”.
Ralph Cassar, Kunsillier tal-AD f’H’Attard, qal li Transport Malta kienet wiegbet li l-proposta ghal 30kph fit-toroq residenzjali. “Ninsab kuntent li ninnota li l-kuncett gie accettat ghall-anqas f’xi toroq, ghalkemm kont nippreferi li kieku t-toroq residenzjali kollha fiz-zoni residenzjali jkunu kollha 30kph. Il-kuncett ta ‘zoni tad-djar – home zones’ gie ukoll addottat bhala kuncett fid-dokument tal-konsultazzjoni li ghamlet Transport Malta fuq il-limiti ta’ velocita’.”

L-ideat fir-rapport gew ippruvati postijiet ohra. Ir-rapport huwa biss il-bidu – ahna naspiraw li r-residenti, min jiehu d-decizjonijiet u organizazzjonijiet varji jahdmu flimkien biex jindirizzaw il-problemi tat-traffiku zejjed fil-lokalitajiet taghna”.
