Syria: Legally Binding UN resolution required

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party stated that a UN declaration on Syria is simply not enough, and that there should be a legally binding resolution. Human Rights activists have stated that over 2000 people have been butchered in Syria by the Assad regime.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said: “The situation in Syria has become intolerable, with tens of people being killed every day and the city of Hama being targeted in particular. The International community cannot keep quiet with such events going on and a UN declaration is simply not enough. The UN Security Council must act swiftly and the EU must follow suit with a legally binding resolution. The Maltese government should pursue all avenues to ensure that the killing by the Assad regime stops”.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “AD reiterates its support to democratic forces of opposition in Syria and in other countries characterised by brutal dictatorships. The European Union should not give its support to such Governments”.
