The recent call by Alternattiva Demokratika, the Green party, for a 24-hour police station in Swieqi is more timely than ever considering that this area is in between Malta’s most popular nightspot (Paceville) and another area (St Andrews) where events are often held.
It has been brought to my attention that, in the early hours of last Sunday, a brutal attack took place in Trejqa Albert M. Cassola. The assailants consisted of a group of approximately eight persons, armed with metal rods and pieces of wood, who attacked one single person. The disturbance was so loud that residents were woken up and tried in vain to get immediate police presence to handle the situation.
Now, should there have been a 24-hour functional police station in Swieqi it would have been easier for the police to take immediate action. It is understandable that there are many demands and stress on the police force but surely the government should do its utmost to provide security and serenity to all villages and towns in Malta, including Swieqi.
Furthermore, residents of the road in question informed me that the police officers could not find the exact location immediately.
In this day and age of technology, I hope that all police cars are equipped with a global positioning system (GPS). The 20 minutes taken for the police to arrive on the scene could have made a huge difference. Hopefully, this appeal will be given priority and serious attention in order to protect all citizens equally and to restore the peace and tranquility to all.
