In a press conference in Sliema, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party said that voting AD is the safest way to ensure that Sliema local council works in the interest of residents. AD said that the election of Michael Briguglio will ensure that the council has a member who is experienced and with a proven track record to defend residents’ rights.
Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson for EU and International Affairs, said: “As a person born and bred in Sliema, it saddens me to see examples of corruption and of “ugliness” in architectural planning . Sliema needs honest, experienced and upright councillors like AD’s Michael Briguglio, who has no ties to the construction lobby that has conditioned the workings of the PNPL. I look forward to a new Local Council which, together with Alternattiva’s Michael Briguglio, will include other upright councillors, whose only aim is the welfare of the Sliema population”.
Carmel Cacopado, AD Spokesperson on Sustainable Development and Home Affairs, said that Alternattiva Demokratika is presenting a quality candidate who has already proven his worth on the two occasions when he was elected as Councillor in the past (between 2003 and 2009).
For Alternattiva Demokratika it is residents who come first not only by seeking to provide the best quality services and amenities but also so that we will have a Local Council which can put up a strong defence against the continuous attacks of speculators on the quality of life of Sliema residents and the commercial community. For six whole years as a Sliema Councillor on behalf of Alternattiva Demokratika, Michael Briguglio was at the forefront making proposals and cooperating with all the others, be it local councillors as well as NGO activists so that the quality of life of the Sliema residents will be protected.
The Council which has just been dissolved has shirked this responsibility as it was engrossed in conflict and conspiracies. In presenting Michael Briguglio, Alternattiva Demokratika is offering an alternative to all this so that the Sliema Local Council will once again act as a shield in defence of the residents.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson and Sliema local council candidate, said: “As a proud Sliema resident, I have been fighting for the rights of residents since the mid-1990s, and I am proud to have had an important role in stopping unsustainable development such as that at Qui-si-sana, the Chalet and Pjazzetta. I look forward to be elected in the next council, where I can work hand in hand with other councilors to ensure that the local council really belongs to residents and not to big developers and careless contractors. In particular, I am proposing to re-introduce a culture of consultation in the Sliema Local Council, of giving top priority to accessible pavements, roads and infrastructure, and of ensuring that Sliema council objects to development which is unsustainable. I will also make sure that developers and contractors are held responsible for works which they carry out”.
