In a post conference in Swieqi, Alternattiva Demokratika focused on
the need that the resident’s interests are protected in what is
referred to as bon vicinanza or secure communities. AD said elected
councillors in its name will give this priority.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “Local Councils should truly
belong to residents. In this way, they will ensure that there is bon
vicinanza in relation to security, noise and a sense of community.
Local councils should work with law enforcement and with wardens on
concrete issues such as theft, throwing away rubbish during improper
hours, keeping pavements clean from waste matter and development works
and noise during improper hours.”
Solange Sant Fournier, Alternattiva Demokratika’s Swieqi local council
candidate said: “Swieqi residents are suffering from two fundamental
problems. On one hand, they are victims of excessive noise pollution
and vandalism especially during summer; on the other hand they are
suffering from the lack of police presence and lack of enforcement
when it comes to traffic and parking regulations. As an elected
candidate in Swieqi I will always uphold the residents rights first
and foremost.”
Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD Spokesperson and Swieqi resident, said:
“Swieqi residents cannot live with this double problem due to the
indifference and arrogance of some members of society – such as the
foreign students – and other members of the commercial community. On
one hand you have the spillover effect from the Paceville Area as many
people leave their vehicles parked in Swieqi, and when come back to go
home they don’t have the decency to respect the resident’s right to
rest; on the other hand there is the internal problem in Swieqi where
for example dangerous situations are created on the road due or double
parking next to commercial establishments or excessive noise coming
from the continuous development whch is making Swieqi a permanent
building site. There is a need of secure communities and for
cooperation between the Council, commercial community and the
authorities.”
“Alternattiva Demokratika will be on the forefront to defend the
resident’s interests and keep insisting with the Police Commissioner
for a permanent police station in this locality, to serve about 10,000
residents”, concluded Prof. Cassola.
