Anna Azzopardi, Alternattiva Demokratika candidate for the Birkirkara Local Council said: “Congestion in Birkirkara cannot be solved by simply widening roads or building flyovers. Birkirkara is crying out for the implementation of the national transport strategy which aims for a decrease in cars on the road.”
“Birkirkara, like other localities, is under siege because of overdevelopment, indeed Birkirkara is one huge mass of buildings with unclear boundaries.”
“This creates a challenge as well as an opportunity for neighbouring local councils to work together in order to find ways and means to decrease traffic from the roads. A properly organised system of regional transport across Birkirkara, Mosta, Naxxar, Msida, Ħ’Attard, Ħal Balzan and Ħal Lija could be an efficient solution to decrease the amount of traffic as well as to improve air quality”
AD Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo mentioned that Birkirkara floods whenever it rains. This happens mainly because building enforcement with regards to wells of an appropriate size was lenient. This has affected both Birkirkara and the neighbouring localities. Birkirkara needs pedestrian zones which, apart from catering for residents, give back roads to people, and discourage through traffic.”
“Open spaces and pedestrian zones are not only needed in the core of Birkirkara, but also in the periphery including in Swatar.”

Il-kwalità tal-ħajja tar-residenti fiċ-ċentru tal-ħidma tagħna
Alternattiva Demokratika tpoġġi l-kwalità tal-ħajja tar-residenti fiċ-ċentru tal-ħidma tagħha. Dan iseħħ billi nindirizzaw kontinwament il-kwalità tal-ambjent urban.
Anna Azzopardi, kandidata ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika għall-Kunsill Lokali ta’ Birkirkara qalet:”B’Kara hi waħda mill-ikbar lokalitajiet f’Malta. Hi ukoll lokalità passaġġa billi minnha jgħaddi t-traffiku sejjer lejn lokalitajiet oħra. Il-konġestjoni fit-toroq residenzjali ta’ B’Kara ma tistax tissolva billi jitwessgħu t-toroq lanqas billi jsiru flyovers jew underpasses. F’B’kara wieħed jista’ jifhem aħjar kemm hu utli li xi darba l-Gvern jimplimenta l-mira tal-istrateġija nazzjonali tat-trasport li jonqsu l-karozzi mit-toroq.”
“B’Kara, xejn inqas minn kull lokalità oħra hi taħt assedju mill-iżvilupp li għaddej f’kull rokna tiegħu b’mod li illum inħolqu masses kbar ta’ bini b’tali mod li mhux faċli li tkun taf fejn tispiċċa B’Kara u fejn tibda lokalità oħra.”
“Dan joħloq sfida kbira fit-toroq imma ukoll opportunità biex il-Kunsilli ġirien jikkollaboraw flimkien ħalli jindirizzaw l-isfida biex jonqsu l-karozzi mit-toroq. It-trasport pubbliku reġjonali bejn B’Kara, Mosta, Naxxar, Msida, Ħ’Attard, Ħal-Balzan u Ħal-Lija jekk organizzat sewwa jista’ jnaqqas kwantità kbira ta’ karozzi mit-toroq u jservi ta’ inċentiv għal titjib sostanzjali fil-kwalità tal-arja.”
Iċ-Chairperson ta’ AD Carmel Cacopardo qal li B’Kara tegħreq fl-ilma tax-xita kull darba li jkun hawn beżqa xita. “Dan iseħħ għax fuq numru ta’ snin l-parti l-kbira ta’ dawk li żviluppaw il-bini naqsu milli jimxu mar-regoli billi jibnu bjar ta’ qisien addattati biex fih jinġabar l-ilma tax-xita. L-impatt fuq B’Kara mhux biss riżultat tan-nuqqasijiet fil-bini f’B’Kara imma ukoll fil-bini fil-lokalitajiet fil-madwar.”
“B’Kara teħtieġ żoni pedonali li mhux biss ikunu riservati esklussivament għar-residenti imma li jservu biex inaqqsu l-iżvilupp ta’ B’Kara bħala lokalità passaġġa u b’hekk it-toroq jibdew jingħataw lura lin-nies. Dan għandu jgħodd mhux biss fiċ-ċentru tal-lokalità imma ukoll fil-periferiji inkluż fis-Swatar.”
