Fi stqarrija, Alternattiva Demokratika esprimiet is-sodisfazzjon taghha ghall-fatt li l-gvern lest li jisma’ fuq uhud mill-iktar aspetti kontroversjali tal-emendi proposti fuq il-ligi dwar l-IVF. Dan johrog minn intervent li ghamel il-Prim Ministru fil-Parlament ‘l-bierah. Il-pass tal-gvern huwa f’waqtu ghax jawgura li tinhema ligi li tirrispetta tabilhaqq il-kumplessitajiet etici li ghandhom riperkussjonijiet socjali sostanzjali.
Is-sens ta’ kawtela u zmien bizzejjed ghar-riflessjoni kien punt li sahqet fuqu Alternattiva Demokratika sa mill-bidu ta’ dan id-dibattitu fil-Parlament. Nergghu intennu li hemm bzonn diskussjoni serja li ma tiddegenerax f’tghajjir u intolleranza, kif sfortunatament qed jigri.
AD ttenni l-pozizzjoni li hadet meta bdiet id-diskussjoni fuq ir-rizervi taghha rigward is-surrogacy li jista’ jwassal ghall-kummercjalizazzjoni tan-nisa. Ttenni wkoll ir-rizervi taghha rigward l-anonimita` fil-‘gamete donation’ partikolarment fuq livell ta’ drittijiet tat-tfal eventwali inkluz is-sahha taghhom. Issostni wkoll li l-gvern ghandu jaghti risposti iktar cari fuq il-proposta ta’ adozzjoni ta’ embrijuni ffrizati; proposta li difficli tahdem, bil-konsegwenza li iktar ma jghaddi z-zmien, pajjizna jista’ jkollu hazna dejjem tizdied ta’ embrijuni ffrizati.
Alternattiva Demokratika tawgura li id-diskussjoni twassal ghal pozizzjonijiet li l-iktar jirrispettaw is-sensittivitajiet etici kif ukoll id-drittijiet u r-responsabbiltajiet tal-partijiet koncernati, kemm it-tfal eventwali kif ukoll tal-genituri taghhom.

Discussing complicated issues respectfully is not a weakness
In a statement, Alternattiva Demokratika expressed its satisfaction on the statement of Prime Minister Muscat in Parliament yesterday. Muscat signalled that government is willing to discuss some of the more controversial aspects of the proposed amendments to the IVF law. Discussing ethical complexities and possible social repercussions is a sign of a mature society, it is surely not a weakness.
AD has already called for respectful and detailed debate. The debate has unfortunately degenerated into intolerance and name calling. This is unacceptable.
AD reiterates reservations on surrogacy related to the possible commercialisation of women’s bodies. It also reiterates its reservations regarding anonymous gamete donation. It is important that the law is clearer in regards to preventing health issues which may arise. The government should give clearer answers on the proposed adoption of frozen embryos; a proposal which is difficult to put in practice, and how it plans to avoid as much as possible the build up in the numbers of frozen embryos.
AD hopes that the discussion respects ethical sensitivities and steers away from fundamentalisms and intolerance. It is important that the rights and responsibilities of the parties concerned, including the right to information, both of eventual children as well as their parents are respected.
