Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party said that it is unacceptable that the Prime Minister and some other members of parliament shall vote against the second reading of the divorce bill.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: “Though the Prime Minister might seem more at ease with himself and his conscience by voting no, he has a clear responsibility towards the will of the Maltese people. Parliamentarians, who did not have the courage to take a decision on divorce in parliament and shifted the responsibility onto the people through a referendum, should stand by the result of the referendum. Over 53% of voters want the introduction of divorce in Malta. Those who are not ready to vote in favour should resign. Lawrence Gonzi and other members of parliament had all the time in the world to debate divorce in parliament, and in that case they would have been entitled to vote as they please. But it was the same members of parliament who decided to go for a referendum on the issue.”
