Our core Green goal: extensive investment in cleaner means of transport

One core Green goal is to transform the transport sector across Europe to overcome the existing dependency on polluting cars as quickly as possible, to stop the increasing pollution from aviation and to invest extensively in public transport including sea transport.

AD Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo explain Alternattiva Demokratika’s green proposals on transport. “Our Green goal is aimed to facilitate travelling with those means which pollute the least. In Malta it is essential that the National Transport Master Plan is implemented: in particular the objective of reducing cars from our roads should be addressed without any more delays. It is to be pointed out the National Master Plan identifies that around 50% of trips using private transport in the Maltese islands are of a duration of under fifteen minutes, signifying short distance trips. The objective of such short trips can be adequately satisfied with suitable public transport facilities and adequate infrastructure encouraging sustainable mobility.”

“Government’s declaration that it intends to start the process which would remove petrol and diesel run cars from our roads, and consequently the electrification of private transport or using alternative technology with less pollution, is welcome.  However, this is not sufficient. It must be accompanied by a drive to reduce the number of cars from our roads, together with more investment in public transport to be provided with public transport quality corridors together with the infrastructure required for alternative means of sustainable mobility: cycling and walking. We need investment in bicycle superhighways along arterial roads connecting all towns and villages.”

“Residential roads should be safe for all to use, in particular for pedestrians and cyclists through the limitation of permissible speed to a maximum of 30 km/hr. Where possible, we should strive to introduce and thereafter extend pedestrian areas in order to ensure safer and clean residential areas. Bicycle racks should be increased in all localities.”

“It is not acceptable that in the fight against climate change, EU funds are being used to increase the space for cars. The extension and further development of Malta’s road network utilising EU funds just postpones the problem of traffic congestion in our roads.

Traffic congestion is the cause and not the effect of our road problems. The problem to be addressed is not the width or length of our roads but the number of our cars. We should reclaim back our roads”, Carmel Cacopardo concluded.

Il-mira l-ħadra: li l-qasam tat-trasport ikun trasformat mal-Ewropa kollha

Hi mira ċentrali tal-politika ħadra li l-qasam tat-trasport ikun trasformat mal-Ewropa kollha biex tkun megħluba, malajr kemm jista′ jkun, id-dipendenza fuq karozzi li jniġġsu, biex jonqos it-tniġġis mill-avjazzjoni u biex jiżdied l-investiment fit-trasport pubbliku, inkluż dak bil-baħar.

Carmel Cacopardo illum spjega l-proposti ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika dwar it-trasport u l-mobilita’. “B’mod partikolari biex ikun iffaċilitat l-ivvjaġġjar b’mezzi li jniġġsu l-inqas. F’Malta jeħtieġ li tkun implimentata bla iktar dewmien l-istrateġija Nazzjonali dwar it-Trasport u b’mod partikolari l-mira li jonqsu l-karozzi mit-toroq. Għandu jkun innutat li l-iStrateġija Nazzjonali dwar it-Trasport identifikat li nofs il-vjaġġi bi transport privat fil-gżejjer Maltin għandhom durata ta’ inqas minn ħmistax-il minuta, indikazzjoni li huma vjaġġi ta’ distanzi qosra. L-oġġettiv ta’ vjaġġi qosra jista’ jintlaħaq faċilment u bla diffikultà permezz ta’ facilitajiet adegwati ta’ transport pubbliku flimkien ma infrastruttura adegwata li tinkoraġixxi mobilità sostenibbli.”

“Huwa tajjeb li l-Gvern diġa iddikjara pubblikament li fi ħsiebu jibda l-proċess li għandu jwassal għat-tneħħija mit-toroq ta′ karozzi li jaħdmu bil-petrol u d-diesil u allura favur karozzi li jaħdmu bl-elettriku jew b’teknoloġija li tniġġes mill-inqas. Imma dan mhux biżżejjed. Irid jonqos ukoll drastikament in-numru ta′karozzi mit-toroq u dan flimkien ma iktar investiment fit-titjib tat-trasport pubbliku pprovdut b’kurituri riżervati għalhekk flmikien ma’  titjib fl-infrastruttura li tħajjar iż-żieda fil-mobilità alternattiva bħall-użu tar-roti u l-mixi. Hemm bżonn investiment f’bicycle superhighways tul it-toroq arterjali kollha li jgħaqqdu l-lokalitajiet tagħna.”

“It-toroq residenzjali għandhom ikunu siguri għal kull min juzahom, kemm għal min jimxi kif ukoll għal min jagħmel użu mir-rota.   Għaldaqstant l-veloċità massima fit-toroq residenzjali għandha tkun ta′ 30 kilometru fis-siegħa. Kull fejn in-natura tat-toroq tippermetti, naħdmu biex jiżdiedu ż-żoni riservati għan-nies permezz tal-pedestrijanizazzjoni, biex b’hekk ikollna arja aktar nadifa u żoni urbani iktar siguri. Jiżdiedu l-bicycle racks madwar il-lokalitàjiet.”

Carmel Cacopardo saħaq li mhux aċċettabbli li waqt li għaddejja ġlieda kontra l-bidla fil-klima mal-Ewropa kollha, fondi tal-Unjoni Ewropea jintużaw biex f’Malta jiżdied aktar spazju għall-karozzi. Hemm bżonn nagħtu t-toroq lura lin-nies.
