Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika-The Green Party, on Environment Day, commemorated on 5th June, lauded environmental NGOs which during the past twelve months sought to present a common front in their environmental activities.

“It was very satisfying,” stated Cacopardo, “that for the first time ever, a substantial number of environmental NGOs joined Alternattiva Demokratika in setting up the Coalition for the Abolition of Spring Hunting calling for an abrigative referendum such that decisions which Parliament has failed to take in the past years will be acted upon by the electorate through the use of its vote in a referendum.

“During the comning months, added Cacopardo, this coordinated activity has to intensify due to the fact that Government is continuously manifesting its lack of sensitivity towards its international obligations towards biodiversity through its intention to permit once more permit bird trapping.

No one should be afraid when confronted with an anti-democratic attitude which is seeking to severely curtail the right to hold an abrogative referendum.”

Carmel Cacopardo concluded by stating that Alternattiva Demokratika is proud that during its 25 years of existence it has been the only political party in Malta which has expressed itself and acted on these matters.

Carmel Cacopardo, Deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika,  fl-okkazjoni ta’ Jum l-Ambjent, iċċelebrat għada 5 ta’ Ġunju, sellem lill-għaqdiet ambjentali kollha Maltin li tul it-tnax-il xahar li għaddew fittxew li jidentifikaw front komuni fil-ħidma tagħhom.

“Kien ta’ sodisfazzjon għal kulħadd,” qal Carmel Cacopardo, “li għall-ewwel darba numru sostanzjali ta’ għaqdiet ambjentali ngħaqdu flimkien ma’ Alternattiva Demokratika fit-twaqqif tal-Koalizzjoni għall-Abolizzjoni tal-Kaċċa fir-Rebbiegħa biex isejhu għal Referendum Abrogattiv ħalli d-deċiżjonijiet li tul is-snin naqas illi jieħu l-Parlament jeħodhom il-poplu Malti permezz tal-vot tiegħu f’referendum.

Tul ix-xhur li ġejjin, kompla jgħid Cacopardo, din il-ħidma trid tissokta u dan minħabba li l-Gvern kontinwament qed juri n-nuqqas ta’ sensittivita tiegħu għall-obbligi internazzjonali għall-ħarsien tal-biodiversita billi issa jidher li ser jippermetti mill-ġdid l-insib.

Ħadd m’ghandu jibża’ meta ikkonfrontat minn attitudni anti-demokratika li trid tnaqqas drastikament id-dritt ghal referendum abrogattiv.”

Carmel Cacopardo ikkonkluda billi qal li Alternattiva Demokratika hi kburija li tul il-25 sena li ilha teżisti kienet l-uniku Partit Politiku f’Malta li semma leħnu u aġixxa fuq dawn l-affarijiet.
