Mental Health: do not segregate and create new stigmas

With regards to the transfer of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to the Mount Carmel Hospital, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Prof. Arnold Cassola, said: “We agree with the Richmond Foundation that “Whether we like it or not, Mt Carmel is still feared by many and these persons are likely to refuse or discontinue this essential treatment to avoid going to Mt Carmel Hospital.” The Health authorities should encourage and make it easier for patients to undergo this essential regular treatment rather than evoking stigmas that will discourage them from doing so.”

B’riferenza għaċ-ċaqliq tat-terapija elettrokonvulsiva (ECT) lejn l-isptar Monte Karmeli, iċ-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, il-Prof. Arnold Cassola, qal: “Naqblu mar-Richmond Foundation li, rridu jew ma rridux, hemm min għadu jibza’ minn Monte Karmeli u r-riskju hu li dawn il-persuni jirrifjutaw jew jieqfu milli jieħdu dan it-trattament essenzjali biex ma jmorrux l-Isptar Monte Karmeli. L-awtoritajiet tas-saħħa għandhom jinkuraġġixxu lill-pazjenti u jagħmluha aktar facli għalihom biex jieħdu dan it-trattament essenzjali u mhux jevokaw stigmi li jiskuraġġuhom mit-trattament.”
