Megabyte, a positive example of research, innovation, job creation

During a visit to Megabyte Ltd in Mosta, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Arnold Cassola, said: “Megabyte is an example to be followed with regards to research, innovation and job creation. Over the years, Megabyte has consistently offered its support in developing and promoting local talent in the ICT field and has always welcomed any opportunity to show students firsthand what the real world of IT involves. Megabyte collaborated with The University of Malta’s Faculty of ICT for the past 3 years to hold the annual ‘Megabyte final year student IT Project Award.”

Cassola also welcomed the Nationalist Party’s initiative to file a Parliamentary motion proposing the inclusion of four Constitutional amendments to guarantee digital rights: the right to internet access, the right to access information, the right to disseminate information and the right to informational self-determination.

Henrik Piski, AD spokeperson for Digital Society, said: “The European Greens always claimed that digital rights are a basic right to all. A modern society must provide equal access to digital communication to everyone. Government regulation is necessary to maintain a free Internet for all and ensure neutrality and equal treatment of all users. Under no circumstances may there be any government coercion to filter or manipulate the transferred data.”

Carmel Caccopardo, Deputy Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika, added: “In our modern information and communication society, it is of supreme importance that all citizens have complete control over the processing of their information and their communication at any time should they wish to do so. This freedom for all citizens is intended to prevent the concentration of power over systems and data in the hands of individuals. The aim is to distribute power as broadly as possible amongst all citizens and thus secure their freedom and their privacy.”

Waqt żjara fil-Megabyte Ltd ġewwa l-Mosta, iċ-Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, Arnold Cassola, qal: “Il-Megabyte hija eżempju li tajjeb ikun segwit fejn tidħol riċerka, innovazzjoni u ħolqien ta’ impjiegii. Matul is-snin il-Megabyte konsistentement tat l-appoġġ tagħha biex tiżviluppa u tippromwovi talent Malti fil-qasam tal-informatika u dejjem laqgħet opportunitajiet biex turi lill-istudenti xi jfisser li tkun taħdem fid-dinja tal-informatika. Il-Megabyte ħadmet id f’id mal-Fakulta` tal-ICT tal-Universita` ta’ Malta għal dawn l-aħħar 3 snin biex kull sena jittella’ il- ‘Megabyte final year student IT Project Award.”

Cassola laqa’ wkoll l-inizjattiva tal-Partit Nazzjonalista biex tiġi ippreżentata mozzjoni fil-Parlament li tipproponi l-inklużjoni ta’ erba’ emendi Kostituzzjonali li jiggarantixxu drittijiet diġitali: id-dritt għall-aċċess għall-internet, id-dritt għall-aċċess ta’ informazzjoni, id-dritt li twassal informazzjoni u d-dritt għal awto-determinazzjoni informazzjonali.

Henrik Piski, il-kelliem ta’ AD dwar is-soċjeta’ Diġitali qal: “Il-Greens Ewropej dejjem saħqu li d-drittijiet diġitali huma dritt bażiku għal kulħadd. Soċjeta` moderna jeħtieġ tipprovdi aċċess ugwali għall-komunikazzjoni diġitali lil kulħadd. Il-Gvern jeħtieġ li jirregola s-servizz biex ikun hawn Internet b’xejn għal kulħadd u biex jara li jkun hawn newtralita` u trattament ugwali għal kulħadd. Taħt l-ebda ċirkustanza ma jista’ jkun hemm manipulazzjoni jew indħil mill-Gvern dwar l-informazzjoni li tkun għaddejja.”

Carmel Caccopardo, Deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika, żied jgħid: “Fis-soċjeta moderna ta’ informazzjoni u komunikazzjoni, hija ta’ importanza kbira li ċ-ċittadini kollha ikollhom kontroll sħiħ fuq l-iproċessar tal-informazzjoni u l-komunikazzjoni tagħha f’kull ħin, dejjem jekk ikunu jixtiequ. Din il-liberta` ta’ kull ċittadin hija immirata biex ma tħallix li l-poter fuq dawn is-sistemi ikun ikkonċentrat f’idejn ftit individwi. L-għan huwa li l-poter ikun mifrux kemm jista’ jkun bejn iċ-ċittadini kollha u b’hekk ikollhom il-liberta` u l-privatezza tagħhom imħarsa.”
