Alternattiva Demokratika reiterates that Maltese citizens should be given the right to vote in Embassies abroad for National elections.
Prof Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said: “The office of the Prime Minister has confirmed that sponsored Air Malta flights will be offered to voters to come back to Malta. In this period of economic austerity it is irresponsible of the Maltese government to fork out over 1 million euros from taxpayers’ money to subsidise these flights. Instead, as in all civil and democratic EU states, all Maltese citizens who have reached the age of 18 on the day of the election should be given the facility to vote at their nearest Maltese embassy. This is a democratic right of all Maltese citizens”.
Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said: “Voting rights of Maltese living abroad should be guaranteed through most accessible methods possible, as used by advanced democracies. PN and PL should desist from accepting fossilized voting methods based on mistrust”.
