“The European Council’s conclusion to postpone a decision as to the steps to be taken on the Mediterranean migration issue is shameful.” This was stated by Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairman of AD-The Green Party.
“This means,” added Cacopardo, “that at the moment of truth the European Council was incapable of putting into practice the European values of respect towards life and human dignity. The EU has for years been postponing decisions on real and practical solidarity on the Mediterranean migration issue as an EU issue. Malta should publicly support the positions taken by the European Greens and recently reiterated by EU Parliament President Schultz on responsibility sharing and the reform of the Dublin II Convention as well as the creation of legal migration channels into the EU.
Cacopardo concluded by saying: “At this moment of truth, the Greens in Malta support the Maltese Government’s insistence (as supported by the Greek and Italian governments) that immigration on the Mediterranean border of the Union is an EU issue like any other. AD understands that it is necessary that the Maltese Government uses strong language in its criticism of the EU position, yet it hopes that its decisions are such that the human dignity of the immigrants is respected at all times.”

“Il-konklużjoni tal-Kunsill Ewropew li jipposponi deċiżjoni dwar x’passi għandhom jittieħdu fuq l-livell ta’ Unjoni Ewropeja dwar l-immigrazzjoni fil-Mediterran hi tal-mistħija.” Dan qalu Carmel Cacopardo, Deputat Chairperson ta’ Alternattiva Demokratika.
“Dan kollu,” żied jgħid Cacopardo, “jfisser li l-Kunsill Ewropew fis-siegħa tal-prova ma kienx kapaċi jqiegħed fil-prattika l-valuri Ewropej ta’ rispett lejn il-ħajja u id-dinjita tal-bniedem. L-Unjoni Ewropeja ilha s-snin issa tipposponi li tieħu deċiżjoni dwar solidarjeta’ prattika. Malta ghandha pubblikament tappoġġa l-posizzjonji mittieħda mill-European Green Party u riċentement ukoll mill-President tal-Parlament Ewropew Schultz dwar solidarjeta effettiva (responsibility sharing) u riforma tal-Konvenzjoni Dublin II kif ukoll il-ħolqien ta’ metodi legali għall-migrazzjoni fl-Unjoni Ewropeja.
Carmel Cacopardo ikkonkluda billi qall: “F’din is-siegħa ta’ prova l-Alternattiva Demokratika tappoġġa l-insistenza tal-Gvern Malta, b’appoġġ ukoll tal-Gvernijiet tal-Greċja u l-Italia,li l-immigrazzjoni fuq il-fruntiera Mediterranea tal-Unjoni Ewropeja hi materja tal-Unjoni ta’ serjeta’ u gravita daqs kull materja oħra. Alternattiva Demokratika filwaqt li tifhem li hu neċessarju li l-Gvern Malti jgħaddi kummenti iebsa fil-konfront tal-istituzzjonijiet Ewropej tittama li d-deċiżjonijiet li jiġu mittieħda ikunu tali li jirrispettaw id-dinjita’ umana tal-immigranti f’kull ħin.”
