Cohabitation and Civil Unions should form part of Maltese Law and Social Policy

In a press conference in Valletta, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party appealed to parliament to legislate in the fields of cohabitation and civil unions.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said: “As the only progressive political party in Malta, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party is appealing to parliament to legislate both in the field of cohabitation and civil unions. As regards cohabitation, AD believes that persons who live together for an established number of years should have rights and responsibilities towards each other. This counts for various groups including those in a relationship as well as relatives. As regards civil unions, AD believes that same-sex couples should enjoy equal legal rights and not be discriminated against in social and family policies. They should therefore have the right to enter into civil unions that entail equal mutual rights and responsibilities that married different-sex couples are entitled to. In both cases, several EU member states developed legislative models which Malta can adopt”.

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, AD Deputy Chairperson and Spokesperson for Civil Rights, said : “Malta is a signatory of the EU charter on the fundamental rights of the EU citizen, which is entrenched in the Lisbon Treaty and which prohibits discrimination on various grounds including sexual orientation, as clearly stated in article 21 of this same charter. This charter is a step forward and is a tool to protect the LGBT community in the 27 member states. AD fully supports the struggle of LGBT persons against discrimination, and, contrary to the PN and PL, we are the only political party in Malta that supports the proposed EU anti-discrimination directive”.

Angele Deguara, AD Spokesperson on Social Policy said: “AD believes that social policy should aim at integrating everyone in society regardless of sex or sexual orientation. LGBT persons still face a number of difficulties in social life which are causing them unnecessary hardship. A modern, pluralistic society should not base its policies on one model of the family but should recognise different family forms and design policies which reflect this reality”.

“Il-Koabitazzjoni u l-Unjonijiet Civili ghandhom ikunu jiffurmaw parti mil-Ligi Maltija u mill-Politika Socjali” – AD

Waqt konferenza stampa fil-Belt, l-Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party appellat lill-parlament biex jillegizla fil-qasam tal-koabitazzjoni u tal-unjonijiet civili.

Michael Briguglio, ic-Chairperson tal-AD, qal “Bhala l-uniku partit progressiv f’Malta, l-Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party qed jappella lill-parlament biex jghaddi ligijiet kemm fil-qasam tal-koabitazzjoni kif ukoll fuq unjonijiet civili. Fir-rigward tal-koabitazzjoni, l-AD temmen li dawk li jghixu flimkien ghal certu numru ta’ snin ghandu jkollhom drittijiet u responsabbiltajiet lejn xulxin. Dan jghodd ghal diversi gruppi inkluz dawk li qeghdin f’relazzjoni kif ukoll membri tal-istess familja. Rigward unjonijiet civili, l-AD temmen li koppji tal-istess sess ghandu jkollhom drittijiet daqs koppji ohra. M’ghandux ikun hemm diskriminazzjoni kontrihom f’dik li hija politika socjali u tal-familja. Ghalhekk ghandu jkollhom id-dritt li jiffurmaw unjonijiet civili li jinvolvu drittijiet u responsabbiltajiet reciproki bhal ma ghandhom koppji mizzewgin. Fiz-zewg kazijiet, hafna pajjizi tal-UE jezistu mudelli legizlattivi li Malta tista taddotta”.

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, id-Deputy Chairperson tal-AD u Kelliema ghad-Drittijiet Civili, qalet: “Malta iffirmat ic-charter tal-UE dwar id-drittijiet fundamentali tac-cittadini tal-UE, li sar parti mit-Trattat ta’ Lisbona u li ma jippermettix li ssir diskriminazzjoni fuq diversi fatturi inkluz l-orjentazzjoni sesswali, kif inhu iddikjarat b’mod car f’artiklu 21 tal-istess charter. Dan ic-charter huwa pass ‘il quddiem u huwa ghodda li tipprotegi il-komunita LGBT fis-27 stat membru tal-UE. L-AD tappogga bis-shih il-glieda ta’ persuni LGBT kontra d-diskriminazzjoni, u, ghall-kuntrarju tal-PN u l-PL, ahna l-uniku partit f’Malta li jappogga d-direttiva proposta mill-UE kontra d-diskriminazzjoni”.

Angele Deguara, il-kelliema tal-AD ghall-politika socjali, qalet, “L-AD temmen li l-politika socjali ghandu jkollha l-ghan li tintegra lil kulhadd fis-socjeta minghajr distinzjoni fuq bazi ta’ sess jew orjentazzjoni sesswali. Persuni LGBT ghadhom qed jaffaccjaw numru ta’ diffikultajiet fil-hajja socjali li qed jikkawzawlhom tbatija u problemi bla bzonn. Socjeta moderna, pluralista m’ghandhiex tibbaza l-politika taghha fuq mudell wiehed ta’ familja imma ghandha taghraf forom differenti ta’ familja u tfassal politika li tirrifletti din ir-realta”.
