Circus: AD supports protest against exploitation of animals

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party expressed its support of the protest organised by animal welfare NGOs against exploitation of animals in circus.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said: “Once again the Green Party is supporting animal welfare organisations in their legitimate protest against exploitation of animals in circuses. We appeal to the public to choose circuses which are not involved in such practices”.

Simon Galea, AD Spokesperson for Animal Welfare and Agriculture said: “Confinement to restricted spaces, transportation and performing abnormal acts are all factors contributing to stress and trauma inflicting a number of circus animals. The natural environment of animals such as lions, elephants and giraffes is the savannah and not circuses”.

“Alternattiva Demokratika’s position with regards to circus animals was always clear and would like to take this opportunity and reaffirm its position by calling on local authorities to ban the use of such exotic animals. Definitely the circus environment cannot cater for the needs of such big animals”.

Andre` Vella, ADZ – The Green Youth Chairperson said: “Tonight’s protest should remind the authorities that animal use in the circus is akin to animal cruelty and abuse. We are coming from a year where various stories about animal cruelty shocked Malta, calling for proper legislation to protect animals. The exploitation of animals for the entertainment of humans is unacceptable, and AD will be present in tonight’s protest”.
