Call for more accountability by members of parliament

There is a need for members of parliament to act ethically at all times. Although there is no culture of resignations in our country, there is a need for more accountability especially from those who are responsible for running our country.

ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson Sandra Gauci said this in relation to Minister of Finance Clyde Caruana admitting that he had given the wrong information to Parliament about the remuneration of Air Malta Chairman David Curmi.

After earlier denying a Shift News report that Curmi was receiving any additional payment over and above his package of €21,500 per month, he has now admitted that he is also being paid an additional €10,000 honorarium as a member of the board.

These scandalous payments are being made at a time when the Government is asking the European Commission the go ahead to give Air Malta up to €300 million in subsidies, while the workforce are still waiting for the negotiation of a new collective agreement for them.

“We demand accountability from a government whose ministers seek to cover the pigging out of some with blatant lies”, concluded Gauci.

Sejħa għal aktar kontabbiltà mill-membri parlamentari

Hemm bżonn li l-membri parlamentari jimxu b’etika fl-aġir tagħhom kull ħin. Għalkemm f’pajjiżna ma teżistix kultura ta’ riżenji, hemm il-ħtieġa li jkun hemm aktar kontabbiltà speċjalment minn dawk li huma responsabbli li jmexxu lil pajjiżna.

Iċ-Chairperson ta’ ADPD-The Green Party Sandra Gauci qalet dan fl-isfond ta’ dak li ħareġ din il-ġimgħa fejn il-Ministru tal-Finanzi Clyde Caruana ammetta li kien ta informazzjoni żbaljata lill-Parlament dwar il-ħlasijiet liċ-Chairman tal-Air Malta David Curmi.

Wara li aktar kmieni kien ċaħad rapport ta’ Shift News li Curmi kien qiegħed jirċievi ħlas addizzjonali barra il-pakkett tiegħu ta’ €21,500 fix-xahar, issa ammetta li qiegħed jitħallas ukoll onorarja ta’ €10,000 addizzjonali bħala membru tal-bord.

Dawn il-ħlasijiet skandalużi qegħdin iseħħu fi żmien meta l-Gvern qiegħed jitlob lill-Kummissjoni Ewropea li jagħti sa €300 miljun f’sussidji, filwaqt li l-ħaddiema għadhom qegħdin jistennew l-innegozzjar ta’ ftehim kollettiv ġdid għalihom.

“Nitolbu kontabbiltà minn gvern li l-ministri tiegħu ifittxu li jgħattu l-ħniżrijiet ta’ x’uħud b’gideb sfaċċat”, temmet tgħid Gauci.
