AD welcomes Maltese government recognition of Libyan transitional Council

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party welcomes the government’s recognition of the Libyan transitional Council.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, said that  “Alternattiva Demokratika welcomes the fact that Foreign Minister Borg declared that the government of Malta is recognising the Libyan rebels as the one sole interlocutor of the Libyan people.  Malta could no longer have as its interlocutor Muammar Gaddafi, the brutal butcher and dictator”.

Prof. Cassola added that “we appeal to Libyan Ambassador in Malta Saadun Sweidan to pluck up courage, denounce Colonel Gaddafi and start representing the Libyan people.  We realize it is not an easy thing to do if one still has relatives based in Libya.  However, the Libyan Ambassador should live up to his reputation as a writer and intellectual and act as real intellectuals do, by denouncing the atrocities of the Colonel’s government and giving voice to the aspirations of the Libyan people”.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson said that “Alternattiva Demokratika believes that the international community should also take action as regards other current human rights crises, as is the case in Syria, Yemen and Bahrain. The European Union in particular should support opposition movements that are struggling for democracy”.
