AD supports Human Rights Walk regarding Persons with Disability

Alternattiva Demokratika – the Green Party expressed its supports of the Human Rights Walk organised by the National Commission for People with Disability, with the support of the EU, in Valletta.

Claire Azzopardi Lane, AD Spokesperson for Disability Issues, said that “the rights of persons with disability are basic human rights. Amongst current challenges in Malta, one finds the need for better opportunities for post-secondary inclusive education for people with learning disability, access to leisure for young people with disability, accessibility in all aspects of social life, employment opportunities, financial subsidies towards personal assistants and independent community living.”

“AD joins the Malta Deaf Community in their appeal to the Maltese Government to recognize the Maltese sign language as a legitimate language. We also join the global Deaf Community in general in their support against the fact that the Italian Government originally planned to recognize the deaf sign language system as “Italian Sign Language”, is now planning to refer to it a “language of mimes and gestures”. The Deaf Sign Language users throughout the world are outraged by this insult, as it has long been proven and recognised worldwide, that Sign Language is a language in every sense of the word. Sign Language just as any spoken language has its own structure, syntax, linguistics, synonyms and morphemes.  It is clear that the Italian government is breaking the protocols and agreements as described in the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which they themselves have ratified.”

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said that “AD has been making various proposals with regard to persons with disability as we believe in social inclusion, independent living and community participation. Persons with disability, those who support them, their families and carers and civil society representatives such as NGOs, should be given more voice in social policy.”

L-AD tappoggja l-Mixja favur id-Drittijiet Umani ta’ Persuni b’Dizabilita

L-Alternattiva Demokratika – the Green Party esprimiet l-appogg taghha ghall-Human Rights Walk organizzata mill-Kummissjoni Nazzjonali, Persuni b’Dizabilita, bl-appogg tal-UE, gewwa l-Belt Valletta.

Claire Azzopardi Lane, il-Kelliema tal-AD dwar id-Dizabilita, qalet li “id-drittijiet ta’ persuni b’dizabilita huma drittijiet umani bazici.  Fost l-isfidi li ghandna bhalissa f’Malta hemm il-bzonn ghal opportunitajiet ahjar ghal edukazzjoni post-sekondarja inklussiva ghal persuni b’dizabilitajiet fit-taghlim, access ghal attivitajiet fil-hin liberu ta’ zaghzagh li ghandhom dizabilita, accessibilita f’kull qasam tal-hajja socjali, opportunitajiet ta’ xoghol, sussidji finanzjarji ghal assistenti personali u ghal hajja indipendenti fil-komunita.”

“L-AD tinghaqad mal-Ghaqda Persuni Neqsin mis-Smiegh fit-talba taghhom sabiex il-lingwa tas-sinjali bil-Malti tigi rikonoxxuta mill-Gvern bhala lingwa legittima. Ninghaqdu ukoll mal-komunita’ internazzjonali ta’ persuni neqsin mis-smiegh fid-dizapprovazzjoni taghhom ghal fatt kif il-Gvern Taljan l-ewwel ippropona li japprova il-lingwa tal-persuni neqsin mis-smiegh bhala “Lingwa Taljana tas-Sinjali”, izda issa qed jipproponi li jsejhilha “Lingwa tal-Mimi u l-Gesti”.  Dawk li juzaw din il-lingwa tas-sinjali madwar id-dinja huma rrabbjati hafna b’dan l-insult, minhabba li l-lingwa tas-sinjali hija lingwa f’kull sens taghha. Bhal kull lingwa ohra mitkellma, il-lingwa tas-sinjali ghandha l-istruttura taghha, is-sintass, il-lingwistika, sinonimi u morfemi.  Huwa car li l-gvern Taljan qed jikser il-protocols u l-ftehim li jinsab fil-Konvenzjoni dwar id-Drittijiet ta’ Persuni b’Dizabilita tal-Gnus Maghquda (UNCRPD), li hu stess irratifika.”

Michael Briguglio, ic-Chairperson tal-AD, qal li “l-AD ghamlet diversi proposti fir-rigward ta’ persuni b’dizabilita` minhabba li ahna nemmnu fl-inkluzjoni socjali, f’hajja indipendenti u participazzjoni fil-komunita.  Persuni b’dizabilita, dawk li jghinuhom, il-familji taghhom u dawk li jiehdu hsiebhom flimkien ma rapprezentanti tas-socjeta civili bhal ghaqdiet non-governattivi, ghandu jkollhom vuci akbar fil-politika socjali.”
