A Prime Minister who was a lawyer for Malta’s underworld is not in a position to take decisions on pardons

The future of the Agius brothers, known as Ta’ Maksar,  potentially lies in the hands of their former lawyer, now Malta’s Prime Minister.

Yesterday’s revelations in The Sunday Times of Malta show the extent of influence that the Maltese underworld may potentially exert over the Maltese political and justice system.

ADPD Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said: “The Prime Minister has a duty to ensure that the legal process is not tainted by any form of conflict, which his previous life as a practising lawyer of the underworld seems to suggest. A decision on a pardon for evidence that could bring more people to account for the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia should therefore not rest with him.”

ADPD calls for immediate and urgent legal reforms to establish a framework for such decisions to be taken by a special prosecutor appointed from among Malta’s judiciary.

The fight against the underworld is a battle Malta simply cannot afford to lose.

Prim Ministru li kien avukat tal-kriminalità organizzata ta’ Malta mhux f’pożizzjoni li jieħu deċiżjonijiet dwar maħfriet

Il-futur tal-aħwa Agius, magħrufa bħala Ta’ Maksar, potenzjalment jinsab f’idejn l-eks avukat tagħhom, issa l-Prim Ministru ta’ Malta.

Ir-rivelazzjonijiet tal-bieraħ f’The Sunday Times of Malta juru l-influwenza kbira li l-kriminalità organizzata Maltija tista’ potenzjalment teżerċita fuq is-sistema politika u ġudizzjarja Maltija.

Iċ-Chairperson ta’ ADPD Carmel Cacopardo qal: “Il-Prim Ministru għandu d-dmir li jiżgura li l-proċess legali ma jkunx imtappan minn xi forma ta’ kunflitt ta’ interess maħluqa mill-ħajja preċedenti tiegħu bħala avukat prattikanti tal-kriminalità organizzata Maltija. Deċiżjoni dwar maħfra biex tinkixef aktar evidenza li tista’ twassal biex aktar nies jagħtu rendikont tal-involviment tagħhom fil-qtil ta’ Daphne Caruana Galizia m’għandhiex għalhekk titħalla f’idejn Robert Abela.”

ADPD tappella għal riformi legali immedjati u urġenti biex tistabbilixxi qafas biex deċiżjonijiet bħal dawn jittieħdu minn prosekutur speċjali maħtur minn fost il-ġudikatura ta’ Malta.

Il-ġlieda kontra l-kriminalità organizzata Maltija hija battalja li Malta ma tistax titlef.
